The Work You Will Do: The Office of Resilience and Coastal Protection is seeking a full-time Environmental Specialist I position assigned to execute several monitoring programs including but not limited to continuous water quality, baseline nutrient, and other resource monitoring. This position is field-oriented concentrating primarily on water quality in the Big Bend Region. Where You Will Work: Crystal River- The Big Bend Seagrasses Aquatic Preserves' office is located on the Crystal River in Citrus County, Florida. Crystal River is a modest-sized town that is self-proclaimed as the 'Home of the Manatee'. St. Martins Marsh and Big Bend Seagrasses Aquatic Preserves are located in west central Florida on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico from Citrus County to Wakulla County. Together, the two Preserves span over 160 miles and encompass approximately one million acres. They provide habitat to sea and shore birds, shellfish including Cedar Key clams, oysters, scallops, pink shrimp, blue crab, sea turtles, sponges, coral, sport fish, dolphins, and the threatened Gulf sturgeon and Florida manatee. The Big Bend Seagrasses Aquatic Preserve is the largest and most pristine aquatic preserve in the state. In addition to the many leisure activities provided by living in a coastal area like Crystal River, Florida, residents pay no state income tax. The percentage of time required to travel the managed areas to perform mission critical duties is approximately 10-30% of the average working day. Pay: The approved pay rate for this position is $43,260.00 annually. Your Specific Responsibilities: Collects, enters, analyzes, and interprets biological and other resource-related data in St. Martins Marsh and Big Bend Seagrasses Aquatic Preserves. Plans, organizes, and implements resource monitoring activities including continuous water quality monitoring and baseline nutrient monitoring. Calibrates, utilizes, and maintains all water quality monitoring equipment. Provides input on state-wide water quality monitoring documents, meetings, and trainings. Follows written state-wide protocols, SOP's, and Quality Assurance Plans. Assists with seagrass monitoring, cultural resource monitoring, marine debris removal, and other resource monitoring. Assists with educational programs and interpretive activities. Generates written documents for associated research, field studies, and data collection to support the management plans. Regularly trailers and operates boats and kayaks. Performs other duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of concepts, terminology, principles and analytical techniques of the natural or physical sciences as they relate to coastal environments. Ability to analyze, evaluate, and interpret scientific and technical data. Ability to prepare technical reports. Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and coordinate work assignments and field work. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to follow written protocols and verbal instruction. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to maintain a valid driver's license. Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner. Ability to perform data entry functions in a database system. Ability to travel, including single-day and multi-day trips. Skilled in the use of personal computers and software for word processing and data entry (Example: Microsoft Office). Ability to swim and use snorkel gear safely, sometimes in poor conditions. Ability to trailer, tow, launch, and operate vessels up to 22'. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
