Employment Type: Full time Shift: Description: GENERAL SUMMARY: The purpose of this position is to assist Mercy College of Health Sciences' students with specialized instruction in their areas of expertise. FERPA SECURITY COMPLIANCE: Incumbent has access to confidential information related to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99), a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records and must comply with the terms of the law as it applies to their job role. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Assists students on a one-to-one or small-group basis to provide learning assistance. Collaborates with instructors to assess the students' needs and how best to address them. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned. MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Completion of a particular course in which assisting is being done with earning at least a 'B' from a higher education institution. Strong interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds. Strong level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality. A copy of unofficial transcripts must be uploaded with application. PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS: Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met. Light work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force frequently, up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. VISUAL ACUITY REQUIREMENTS: Work involves use of computer terminal and extensive reading INTELLECTUAL/EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to adapt to constant change from one task to another, possibly of a different nature, without a loss of efficiency or composure. Ability to perform under stress when confronted with an unusual, dangerous, or emergency situation or in situations when working speed and sustained attention is crucial. Must function effectively under demanding time frames. Ability to maintain a high standard of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with students and co-workers despite the stress of the office work environment. EQUIPMENT/TOOLS: Standard computer terminals, printers, communication systems equipment and special equipment found in assigned area. WORKING CONDITIONS: The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions: protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The worker is subject to a range of noise levels from quiet to moderate: phones, pagers, mechanical alarms and occasional construction work. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to Dean, Students.
