Mid Michigan College seeks individuals who are committed to student learning and success; are service minded and goal-oriented; strive to continually improve themselves; value collegiality and mutual respect; and enjoy collaborating with others.Mid College Assistants (MCA) are individuals who should have completed historically difficult college-level coursework (same course or related course) and possess the ability to promote student learning and success. These assistants attend class lectures and facilitate optional study and review sessions for students enrolled in these targeted courses. The MCA is responsible for identifying challenging content and developing session activities to help students learn, process, and apply course material. They encourage peer-to-peer interactions and collaboration, integrating “how to learn” strategies into their sessions. The MCA is also responsible for ensuring classroom technology (Zoom) is operational each class meeting period, as well as troubleshooting any other related classroom startup issues.These are courses being offered at the Tuscola Technical Center in Caro, MI with a projected start date of October 7, 2024. Mid seeks an MCA who can assist one or more of the following courses:COM.257.V02C T,TH 3:00-4:20 PMENG.111.V04C M,W 3:00-4:20 PMMAT.212.V01C T,TH 4:30-5:50 PMPSY.101.V03C M,W 4:30-5:50 PMAdditionally, supervision will be needed on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for the fall 2024 semester from 8:30 AM - 11:00 AM (2.5 hours) and 12:00 PM - 2:30 PM (2.5 hours). The position shall not exceed 29 hours per week.Attend all lectures for the selected course, take notes, review homework, and read assigned materials.Facilitate weekly learning and study and review sessions, promoting peer-to-peer interactions and integrating a variety of “how to learn” strategies into sessions.Develop study and review session plans and upload them to Moodle or Google Drive (as directed by supervisor).Create handouts or other activities to encourage collaboration, learning, and problem-solving.Communicate with course instructor throughout the term to identify difficult content to process, practice, or review in study sessions.Meet with supervisor to discuss collaborative activities, learning/study strategies, or potential problems or challenges.Assist with study and review outreach activities and communicate session content and availability to students.Maintain accurate and detailed records of study and review sessions for participants and protect student confidentiality as required by FERPA laws.Participate in required training workshops, continued professional development sessions, and departmental meetings.Ensure Zoom connectivity is operational and assist with troubleshooting technical problems when necessary.Create a peer atmosphere and encourage students to reflect on and develop their learning, study, research, and problem-solving strategies for academic success. Facilitate student insights and promote independence in learning.Support and serve as a role model for our mission, vision, strategic and service initiatives. Adhere to the organization’s policies & procedures, and compliance guidelines.Assist with exam proctoring as needed.Perform other duties as assigned to further departmental goals. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:Knowledge of course content and understanding of Supplemental Instruction principles and group facilitation strategies.Ability to work with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and experiences.Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills. Ability to facilitate collaborative learning activities, redirect questions, and explain course concepts and demonstrate effective study strategies.Basic writing and computer skills to document SI sessions and prepare session plans and summary reports.Ability to respond to students’ academic concerns in a courteous and respectful manner.Basic understanding of Zoom video conferencing software and be able to assist the Information Technology (IT) with technology problems if they occur.Education, Certification, Licensure:HS Diploma or EquivalentSuccessfully completed same or similar coursework associated with the MCA workloadCumulative GPA of 3.0 or above for all college courseworkDegree-seeking Mid student enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits preferredExperience/Other Requirements:At least two positive academic references (from faculty or staff familiar with student’s content-area knowledge, study strategies, and communication skills)Willingness to participate in MCA training and ongoing professional development sessions and monthly meetingsWorking Environment:The job responsibilities of this position are performed in a learning support facility, classroom, or lab, which requires a professional image and demeanor, on-time attendance and reliability. The environment has little, if any discomfort due to heat, cold or dust. There is light noise within the environment.There may be occasional travel to other college locations for meetings.There may be occasional travel for training or ongoing professional development.Duties are performed in an independent atmosphere without close direct supervision.The job has intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward (5- 45 pounds).Must meet reasonable and sometimes shifting deadlines, priorities, or demands for accuracy, and may be involved in some unpleasant situations.Work schedule is determined by supervisor with flexible or extended hours as needed by department demands.Note: This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by a person assigned to this job.
