Available Title(s): 155-NN_FACULTY - Research Assistant Professor - Career Business Title: Research Assistant Professor - Career Track Employee Type: Faculty (+) (Fixed Term) Position Term: 12 Month Position Details: Summary of Duties: The Washington State University Department of Crop and Soil Science is seeking a Research Assistant Professor in plant breeding and genetics to lead and participate in ongoing research efforts while developing independent projects. The successful candidate will be highly motivated and thrive in a collaborative environment with the lab, colleagues from the college, and collaborators from USDA ARS and other institutes. If the opportunity arises, the incumbent will be expected to participate in course delivery as needed by the department. The successful candidate must acquire competitive extramural funding from state, regional, national and international agencies, and the agricultural industry to support a comprehensive research and outreach program. Research and outreach activities will include: Lead genomewide association study of seed nutritional components of pulse crops. (25%) Co-lead research on the creation of a phenomics pipeline to select important agronomic traits in pulse crops using an Unmanned Aereal Vehicle and a ground robot. (20%) Develop speed breeding capability in chickpea for the fast creation of improved lines using genomic and phenomic selection methods. (20%) Contribute to the development of cultivar-agnostic predictions of pulse nutritional quality and agronomic performance using unsupervised deep learning techniques. (25%) Presenting research findings through poster/oral presentation, as well as peer-reviewed publication. (5%) Engaged in grant writing and perform other duties as assigned. (5%) Required Qualifications: PhD in Plant Genetics, Plant Breeding, or related disciplines and at least two years of post-PhD research and outreach experience. Experience in designing, conducting, and analyzing data from field-based, applied research. A strong publication record in plant breeding, genomics, and phenomics of crop plants. Skilled in using high-performance computing systems and standalone Linux systems. Strong problem-solving abilities and a capacity for learning new experimental techniques Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with experimental design and bioinformatics skills, including whole genome assembly and annotation, large data set manipulation and filtering, genomewide association study, genomic selection, and metabolic pathway analysis. Experience advising and managing university students. Experience working with pulse crops, preferably lentils, chickpeas and dried peas. Excellent phenotypic and phenomic characterization skills, including field phenotyping of agronomic traits, field phenomic data collection and analysis, and laboratory high throughput characterization of useful seed nutrition traits.
