Beverly Hospital is a full service, community hospital providing leading-edge, patient-centered care to North Shore and Cape Ann residents. New graduate nurses looking to start their Career In Maternal Child Health Services can expect a highly supportive program designed for nurses with less than six months experience who are interested in the field of perinatal nursing. The program is comprised of sequential learning experiences including didactic classroom seminars, computer-based learning, case studies, and clinical experiences incorporating simulation. The program is one-year long and includes two phases: Phase I (0-6 months) is considered the most intensive and rigorous. The RN resident works with a primary preceptor to support clinical competency development on the mother baby unit. Phase II (6-12 months) includes working independently on the mother baby unit with support and mentorship by the clinical nurse specialist. The goal is to solidify the skills of the RN resident on the mother baby unit and to increase confidence as the RN resident transitions into professional practice. Evaluation The assessment of the RN resident's transition into professional nursing practice follows Benner's novice-to-expert continuum. During Phases I and III, the RN resident, RN preceptor, and clinical nurse specialist complete a weekly customized goal and development plan.
