THE ONEONTA MUNICIPAL CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSIONANNOUNCES AN OPEN-COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION FOR THE POSITION OF: POLICE OFFICER #89084-010 DATE OF WRITTEN EXAMINATION: September 28, 2024APPLICATION FILING DEADLINE: Applications may be submitted in person at the City of Oneonta HR Office, located at 24 Bertus Lauren Drive in Neahwa Park, or may be submitted via mail to Oneonta Civil Service Commission, c/o City Hall, 258 Main Street, Oneonta, NY 13820. Applications submitted by mail must be postmarked no later than August 29, 2024. Applications submitted in person must be received at the HR office no later than 4:00 p.m. on August 29, 2024. Applications are available on our website, or in person at the Human Resources/Civil Service Office. All applications must be original documents. We do not accept faxed, electronic or photocopied applications.ALTERNATE TEST DATE POLICY: See belowFILING FEE: A $25.00 non-refundable application fee, or an application fee waiver (go to for each examination for which you apply must be submitted with your application. Please submit a personal check, certified bank check or money order payable to the City of Oneonta. Write the examination number(s) and the applicants name on the check, money order, etc. Cash will not be accepted.VACANCIES: The eligible list established as a result of this examination will be used to fill current vacancies with the Oneonta Police Department as well as future vacancies that may occur during the life of the eligible list.RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT: Candidates must be legal residents of New York State for a minimum of one (1) month immediately preceding the date of the examination.SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: AGE: Candidates must be at least 19 years of age on or before September 28, 2024 to be admitted to the written test. Eligibility for appointment as a Police Officer begins when the candidate reaches age 20. Candidates who reach their 35th birthday on or before the date of written examination are not qualified except as follows: Candidates may have a period of military duty or terminal leave up to six years, as defined in Section 243 (10-a) of the Military Law, deducted from their age for the purpose of meeting the age requirement. Section 58.1(a) requires that applicants not be more than thirty-five years of age as of the date when the applicant takes the written examination Candidates who may be impacted by the maximum age requirement and who are requesting an alternate test date (for active military duty, Sabbath observance or for an alternate test date situation which meets the conditions of the agencys alternate test date policy) are advised to contact the Oneonta Municipal Civil Service Office to discuss their request. Candidates must indicate their date of birth on their application for examination. MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must meet the medical standards prescribed by the New York State Municipal Police Training Council. Employment offers will be conditional upon the successful completion of the medical examination. INVESTIGATIVE SCREENING: As stated in Section 58 of the Civil Service Law, there will be a background investigation conducted in accordance with the standards of the municipal police training council (MPTC).
