Senior Competitive Intelligence Manager The Senior Competitive Intelligence Manager (Senior Manager) leads and manages the firms competitive intelligence function. Using a variety of research and intelligence resources, the Senior Manager provides actionable intelligence and analysis on clients, potential clients, industries, markets, and competitors for use by the Marketing and Business Development Department (MBD), senior management, and department and practice chairs. This role provides research and intelligence support for marketing and business development activities across the firm, including pitches and RFP responses, strategic business development and marketing planning, Client Service Teams, Client Feedback Program, and lateral partner integration. In addition, this position manages delivery of research requests from practice group leaders and other firm leadership in support of firm strategy, including lateral hiring pursuits, practice launches, and client targeting. This role requires an understanding of the latest legal and business research methods and tools and the most effective way to deploy them. The Senior Manager must be able to interpret and analyze research findings, proactively identify trends, and articulate potential opportunities for the firm. Essential duties are performed personally or in conjunction with other members of the Marketing and Business Development Department. Katten offers a hybrid work model, allowing the flexibility to work both on-site and remotely on a regular basis (KattenFlex).The Senior Competitive Intelligence Manager can be located in either our Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, or Washington, D.C. office. Essential Duties and Responsibilitiesinclude, but may not be limited to, the following. Other duties may be requested and/or assigned. Consult with members of MBD, department heads, practice chairs, and/or other stakeholders to define project requirements with a focus on addressing specific business goals through analysis. Conduct research on companies, industries, and clients to identify current developments and legal needs and analyze opportunities for business development or firm strategy advancement. Conduct industry or issue research and analysis to support recommendations on the development of practice areas, substantive capabilities, and marketing strategies around both. In support of legal recruiting efforts and firm development initiatives, analyze and summarize areas of legal practice, other law firms, and geographic markets. Distill vast amounts of information from disparate internal and external sources into clear, concise findings. Develop and maintain a strong understanding of the firms capabilities, including prior experience, clients and industries served, and distinguishing characteristics. Monitor legal and business news sources for current developments to identify and articulate marketing and business development opportunities for the firm. Manage relationship with outsourced research service provider, including managing workflow, ensuring consistency and quality control, and offering feedback and recommendations for improvement. In conjunction with the Director of Client Intelligence, provide research support for firmwide business development programs, including lateral integration, Client Service Teams, and Client Feedback. In collaboration with the Pitch and Proposal Manager, provide support for the development of pitch strategy by identifying potential needs of clients and connecting those to firm capabilities. Maintain a deep understanding of available research tools and best practices for their utilization. Act as the go-to resource for all research questions and projects. Manage templates for various types of research and proactively identify ways to improve CI deliverables and methods. Develop and maintain strong relationships with other administrative departments, including Finance, Innovation, and Library Services. In collaboration with Library Services, evaluate new research tools and technologies for effectiveness and value. Other research and analysis as assigned by the Chief Business Development and Marketing Officer (CBDMO) and Director of Client Intelligence. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Bachelors degree and ten or more years of sophisticated business research, strategic intelligence and/or similar research and analysis experience, preferably in a law firm environment. Expertise in using free and fee-based research tools, including Capital IQ, Intelligize, Lexis, Westlaw, Bloomberg Law, PitchBook, Manzama, and CNS/CasePortal. Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI) is strongly preferred, but not required. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments, often with shifting deadlines. Well-developed analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with the appropriate discretion. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written communication. Customer service mindset with excellent attention to detail and superior organizational skills. Superior knowledge of research tools in transactional, litigation and regulatory areas, as well as general business research. Ability to synthesize and effectively present client and law firm financial data and metrics. Ability to source, understand and summarize litigation dockets, complaints, legal decisions, and regulatory and enforcement actions. The use of good judgment and good interpersonal communication skills. The ability to effectively interface with senior firm leadership as well as legal department and practice leadership. The ability to partner seamlessly with MBD and business professional colleagues on tasks and projects as needed. Contributes positively to the team dynamic and works to help the team continuously evolve. A self-starter who takes ownership of the function and acts as a leader of the function in all appropriate ways across the firm. Ability to occasionally retrieve and distribute marketing-related materials, written documentation, or office supplies weighing up to 20 pounds. Work may require more than 37.5 hours (35 hours in New York) per week to perform the essential duties of the position. The annualized salary range for this position in the New York office is $150, 000 to $190, 000.Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job-related factors permitted by law.
