The examination processing fee may be paid either by sending a check or money order payable to the Director of Finance (please write the examination number and title on your check/money order), paying in-person with a valid credit card, or payment by phone (must have application in office). Applications that do not show training and/or experience to meet minimum qualifications may be disapproved. VACANCIES: This exam is being held for future vacancies in the City of Dunkirk. DUTIES: A Police Captain has responsibility for assisting the Police Chief in administering and supervising the work of personnel assigned to units of the Department. An incumbent may take responsible charge of the Department on an assigned shift, or assist the Police Chief in administering the department and in the development of departmental rules, policy, and operating procedures. The work is performed under the general direction of the Police Chief with wide leeway provided for the use of independent judgment within the confines of department policy. Supervision is exercised over the work of all lower ranking police personnel. Does related work as required. MUNICIPAL CANDIDATES PLEASE NOTE: Participation in this examination will only afford eligibility for promotion within the City of Dunkirk. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: City of Dunkirk - Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status as a Police Lieutenant or four (4) years of permanent competitive class status as a Police Sergeant with the City of Dunkirk. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR QUALIFICATION AND PERMANENT APPOINTMENT: 1) Must be eligible for a Certificate of Training in Police Supervision issued by the Executive Director of the Municipal Police Training Council and complete same within the time limits contained in Title 9, Part 6021.7 of the New York State Code, Rules, and Regulations. 2) Must possess a drivers license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at time of appointment and during service in this classification. 3) Candidates must be legal residents of Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, or Erie County, New York for at least one month immediately preceding the date of an appointment or the date of a written test, whichever comes first. 4) New York State Pistol Permit at time of application, appointment and during service in this classification.
