Delivers direct/indirect patient care utilizing the nursing process through data collection and assessment; implementation and prioritization of patient's problems and needs; and development/implementation/evaluation of a nursing plan of care. Demonstrates critical thinking to assure the delivery of safe, quality, age-specific care. Delegates effectively to appropriate team members. Documents accurately and in a timely manner. Adheres to organizational policies and procedures; regulatory/accrediting body requirements; and professional practice standards. Care will be provided to patients of all ages, from infants to geriatrics. Responsibilities Assist the surgeon throughout the perioperative experience; Perform effectively in emergency and stressful situations; Demonstrate proficiency in perioperative nursing practice as both a scrub nurse and a circulating nurse; Demonstrate appropriate Intraoperative first assisting skills by: Providing exposure/retraction in the operating field Handling and/or cutting tissue (scissors/electrosurgical devices) Providing hemostasis via Electrosurgery - direct and through an instrument Bipolar electrocautery Clamps/clips Pressure/sponging/suctioning Suture ligatures Collagens/cellulose Bone wax Topical hemostatic agents suturing knot tying cutting suture materials would closure would approximation subcuticular closure skin closure staples affix, stabilize and secure drains Assist other team members in the set-up, clean-up, and turnover of operating rooms; Prepare and administer medications; Transport, move, or position patients on the operating table; Deliver safe nursing interventions in an organized, efficient, and prioritized manner; Recognize safety hazards and initiate appropriate preventive and corrective action; Provide exposure/retraction, handle/cut tissue, provide hemostasis, suturing, and wound closure; Apply surgical dressings and remove drains in the PACU upon written order of the surgeon; Evaluate/re-evaluate patient's response to nursing interventions and progress; Collaborate and communicate effectively with team members; Update and revise surgeon preference cards; Assist in the orientation and training of new and tenured personnel; Participate in disaster/emergency procedures and Time Outs; Maintain sterile field integrity; Assume responsibility and accountability for individual knowledge, skills, performance, and behavior in accordance with hospital, division and unit standards of care and policies and procedures; Demonstrate infection control principles and use personal protection equipment appropriately; Participate in staff meetings, educational programs, committees, QI activities, and mandatory in-services; Control costs through the judicious use of human and material resources; Perform other duties as assigned. Skills and Qualifications Graduate of an accredited program for nursing education; BSN preferred; Current unrestricted licensure to practice professional nursing in New York State; Current CPR (BLS) certification required; ACLS and PALS certification required or obtained within 6 months of hire; Minimum 2 years of perioperative nursing experience in both scrub and circulating roles; Successful completion of an RNFA program and internship/clinical hours meeting AORN standards; CRNFA certification required; Knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and operative technique. Successful completion of mandatory requirements including unit proficiencies/competencies; Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; Effective verbal and written communication skills Other Information Reliable transportation required. Heavy lifting: frequent lifting of up to 100 pounds with assistance and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Type of position: Full Time FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
