The Physical Plant team is responsible for operations and maintenance of Wesleyan buildings and grounds. The team includes skilled tradespeople who maintain and repair campus buildings and associated equipment. The physical plant team also operates the Central Power Plant. Reporting to the Electrical Shop Foreperson and working with Fire Safety and Facilities Administration, the technician is responsible for assisting with the maintenance and operation of the University's Academic, Administrative and Residential Facilities Fire and Life Safety Systems. The position will maintain, troubleshoot, test, install, inspect, and repair, fire and life safety systems, such as fire alarms and fire alarm devices. Responsibilities include: Perform regular inspections to ensure that systems and equipment continue to work according to current federal, state, and local standards. Provide on-site emergency troubleshooting and repairs of Fire and Life Safety equipment. Oversee the testing of all alarm panel functions to make sure that every offered feature is functional. Participate in after-hours / emergency and fire drills. Respond to maintenance calls and use device manuals to repair non-functioning fire alarms and restore them to original functionality or replace them, if necessary. Prepare accurate and timely reports. Maintain a company vehicle and tools. Ensure a high level of customer service, satisfaction, and communication. Coordinate support from other Physical Plant trades and outside contractors as needed. Perform all other duties as assigned including similar work on other University owned buildings as directed. Physical Demands/Working Conditions include Balancing, Climbing, Carrying, Pulling/Pushing, Reaching, Repetitive Movement, Sitting, Standing, Twisting, Bending, Lifting (up to 50 lbs.), Climbing ladders, and working from platforms and heights as needed. This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year, position in the physical plant bargaining unit. Typical work hours are Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm with 1/2-hour lunch break. This position may be required to work frequent overtime shifts which may include returning to work between shifts, nights, holidays, and weekends as directed or called. This position is classified as essential personnel. Positions that are designated as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency. This position is required to work on campus. (Relocation assistance to CT is available for those who qualify). Minimum Qualifications High school graduate or equivalent. C5, C6 or L5, L6 license with the State of Connecticut, or NICET certification in Fire Alarm systems A minimum of five years' experience working in the testing, inspection, servicing, preventative maintenance and repair of fire alarm and fire suppression systems (wet, dry, pre-action and deluge). A minimum of five years' experience working with low-voltage systems. Working knowledge of residential and commercial building construction including mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems. Must be able to differentiate types/colors of wire. Must be able to use hand tools, laptop, email, smartphone, and tablet. Must be able to carry and move equipment and tools with or without reasonable accommodation. Working knowledge of applicable local, state, and national building codes and other regulations applicable to area of responsibility. Demonstrated knowledge of proper use of personal protective equipment related to work being performed, knowledge of Safety Data Sheets and proper waste disposal methods and proper application of Lockout Tag out, confined space, and other safety procedures. Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and build to blueprints, drawings and specifications. Effective communication skills. Demonstrated history of satisfied customer service and customer follow-up skills. Desktop computer skills including the fundamental use of internet, e-mail and maintenance management systems. Must have (or be able to obtain prior to hire) and maintain a valid driver's license. Must have the ability to be insured under the University's driving policy. Ability to provide your own basic tools of the trade including, but not limited to, wire cutters, armor cable cutter, line-man pliers, volt/ohm meter, screw drivers, insulated tools, wrenches, etc. Ability to perform the responsibilities of the position listed above with or without reasonable accommodations. Ability to meet the scheduling needs of the position as described above.
