Department Statement Colgate University, a premiere liberal arts university of approximately 3,100 students, seeks two energetic, student-focused career advisers. One will coach students primarily excited about arts, creativity, and media fields (i.e.: performing and studio arts, architecture, branding, advertising, corporate communications, journalism, film, tv, publishing, etc). The second advisor will coach students primarily excited about STEM and sustainability fields (i.e.: bench and natural sciences, tech, engineering, actuarial, sustainability, environmental consulting, etc).This professional will engage in both industry-specific and generalist career advising as a member of our career development team. Utilizing a human-centric, growth mindset approach and leveraging Colgate's four-year career development plan, they will guide deciding and exploring students through understanding what career options best fit a student's interests, strengths, values, and identities. They then will work directly with students on search strategies, applications, and decision-making related to internship, entry-level job, and graduate/professional school searches. It is imperative that all members of the Career Services team build partnerships and relationships with faculty, staff, alumni, parents, employers, and professional colleagues outside of Colgate to ensure we are ensuring the most current and contemporary support for our students. The assistant director would join a highly-motivated team of 15 professionals and 20 student interns, and report to the associate director of career development.This is an exciting time to join Career Services at Colgate, an institution committed to achieving best-in-class preparation to launch liberal arts students into a global, ever-changing workplace. Accountabilities Responsible for conducting effective advising of students and young alumni (in the first five years post-graduation) that results in the student's ability to articulate the value of a rigorous Colgate liberal arts education in relation to opportunities of interest. This career adviser will possess positive excitement about helping students explore a variety of professional options beyond what they may have previously experienced. Candidates should have a passion for engaging with a diverse student body, a strong team orientation, and a deep commitment to student development.Accountable for independently guiding students through a process of clarifying their strengths, interests, and values, and aspects of their identities to gain an understanding of the world of work, and best-fit career areas. Accountable without supervisor oversight to teach students and young alumni to enhance their candidacy and potential for future success by building networks with influencers. Responsible for conducting effective advising of students and young alumni that results in their articulation of the value of their Colgate liberal arts education and co-curricular experiences in relation to opportunities of interest.Responsible for the effective delivery of skill-based learning related to job, internship, and graduate/professional school application processes (e.g. composing targeted applications, interview preparation, offer evaluation). Accountable for developing and maintaining digital and print resources to advance students' career development.Responsible for program management of career development initiatives. In collaboration with office leadership, devise the strategy, manage students' progress through planned initiatives, and report on the program's impact.Accountable for establishing and maintaining connections with student organization leaders, faculty, alumni and parents, and professional associations for the purpose of professional development, building networks of support for students, and instigating opportunities for channeling volunteerism for the benefit of students.
