Location: Farmingdale, NY Category: Professional Posted On: Fri Sep 13 2024 Job Description: Farmingdale State College seeks to hire a full-time Academic Advisor who will advise and serve Farmingdale students as a professional staff member in the College's Department of Science, Technology, & Society (STS). The STS program at Farmingdale is a customizable interdisciplinary curriculum built on the development of a scientific thinking and creative problem-solving skill set. With 1800 registered students in Fall 2024, STS is the largest major on campus, graduating roughly 250 students per year. Graduates of STS go on to careers in healthcare, business, non-profit administration, politics, law, energy sustainability, education, and more. Such a broad range of potential career paths can be supported due to the highly customizable nature of the STS curriculum. For this reason, thoughtful academic advisement plays an instrumental role in ensuring STS students are able to pursue an academically robust and meaningful personalized program of courses which provides them with the specialized skills they seek to acquire. The successful candidate for this position will be expected to: Advise students and assist them with academic planning and course selection, minor selection, and post-graduation plans. Conduct analysis of financial aid audits and communicate with students to resolve financial aid non-compliance issues. Conduct analysis of graduation audits and communicate with students regarding graduation requirements and protocol. Provide students with information and referrals regarding scholarships, career planning, tutoring, study abroad, etc. Register students for specific STS-related courses in Banner. Communicate with the registrar to resolve transcript issues. Provide guidance to students in academic jeopardy: early warning, probation, suspension. Sustain partnerships with other individuals and offices (faculty, tutoring, writing center, disabilities services, financial aid, student affairs, athletics, veterans affairs etc.) so as to assure that students are given appropriate guidance and support. Job Requirements: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in an academic discipline (e.g. STS, psychology, sociology), field related to academic advising (e.g. education, counseling), or other related field. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Excellent record keeping and computer skills (e.g. Excel, Word). Strong drive to help students achieve their academic potential. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in an academic discipline (e.g. STS, psychology, sociology) or field related to academic advising (e.g. education, counseling). At least one year experience in academic advising or general student counseling. Experience working with interdisciplinary programs. Familiarity with Banner and Degreeworks. Experience coordinating across multiple university administrative departments. Additional Information: This is a full-time UUP position. For the first 10 working days, beginning Friday, September 13, 2024, and ending Thursday, September 26, 2024, applications will be limited to UUP Farmingdale.
