Position Summary:Academic advisors assist students in their development by constructing educational plans to achieve their academic goals and complete their course of study. They focus on academic progress, movement towards graduation, and, at times, career goals.Through their fluency with the curriculum, university and department requirements, class requirements, and close collaboration with the faculty, they assist students in making informed decisions about their educational plan.Their knowledge of student-facing offices such as Student Finance, Registrar, Student Success, Learning Success Center, Shevet Glaubach Center for Career Strategy, and Counseling Center provides the student with the necessary tools to navigate potential difficulties on the path to success.This position serves students and involves extensive interpersonal, communication, and social problem-solving skills. A sympathetic and generous disposition is a necessary hallmark of a successful and well-respected advisor as they provide individualized assistance, and are at times interpreting students' needs.Position Responsibilities: ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESAdvise new, returning, transfer, and international students regarding appropriate class selection, academic policies and procedures, the requirements of their major, campus resources, and academic and/or departmental requirementsAssist students in identifying long-term goals, both academically and personally. Guide students to meet their goals through exploration of classes, majors, and academic programs while meeting graduation requirements in a timely fashionUses Starfish for scheduling, note-taking, creating and clearing flags, and follow up on referrals and alertsAll Starfish flags must be cleared in a timely and thorough manner to ensure concern has been addressed to completionStarfish should be checked every 2 to 3 daysParticipate in inter-departmental Student Support Committee meetings to identify students in need of academic advising supportProvide interim follow-up for students in need of supportCheck-in on progress with students and instructors and follow up on referrals and alertsCollaborate with other departments such as Student Success, Learning Success, Residence Life, and Counseling Center to ensure student is connected with the resources on campus that can support their learning and successWill use DegreeWorks, when it is operative, in collaboration with students, faculty, the Registrar's Office, and other departmental advisorsUnderstands academic policies and procedures in order to guide students in decision-makingAssists FTOCs in the transition to university life by collaborating on the first-year student success course which consists of maximally six one-hour group meetings per semesterFollow up with the Enrolled Not Registered List in a timely fashionPerform junior and senior checksAssist students in the Leave of absence or Withdrawal processOpen house and orientation duties as neededPlanning and participating in orientation and registration activitiesConducting student workshops and trainingsOther duties as assignedExperience & Education Background:A Master's degree and five years of experience working at a university, preferably in Academic Student Services are required.Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, along with attention to detail and accuracy.Must be comfortable working with students, administrators, deans, and faculty and confidentially discussing student issues.He/she will demonstrate a proven ability to take independent initiative as well as work collaboratively with the advising team.Excellent computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office and database software, and some night and Sunday hours may be required.Skills & Competencies:The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and experience working as an academic advisor to undergraduate students.The candidate must be comfortable working with students and interacting with faculty and senior administrators.Salary Range:$65,000 - $70,000 About Us:Founded in 1886, Yeshiva University (YU) has a strong tradition of combining Jewish scholarship with academic excellence and achievement in the liberal arts, sciences, medicine, law, business, social work, Jewish studies, education, psychology, and more.We are a leading global educational institution that employs 2,000 people across our various campus locations -- Wilf Campus, Beren Campus, Brookdale Center, Resnick Campus in the Bronx, the Gruss Institute in Jerusalem, the Boys High School in Manhattan, and the Girls High School in Queens.
