What you'll do The Grossing Assistant receives and prepares samples for pathological examination. Assists in the gross examination and dissection of simple anatomic pathology specimens. Performs testing following established procedures. Correlates knowledge and understanding of theory and technical elements of testing to solve problems and answers questions effectively and efficiently. Performs clinical laboratory procedures and examinations which require exercise of independent judgment and which are performed under the supervision of a pathologists' assistant, laboratory manager/supervisor, or director of a clinical laboratory. Selects and prepares representative tissue sections for histological and microscopic examination on simple surgical specimens. Participates in frozen sectioning by orienting tissue specimens in a manner to produce a full section for quick freezing, staining and microscopic viewing. Performs specialized procedures such as decalcification, photographing, inking and special specimen sampling requests. Determines acceptability of specimens and receives specimens and accurately test requests. Prepares slides and tests for macroscopic and microscopic examination and performs manual and automatic staining procedures in accordance with established protocols. Performs quality control processes. Maintains laboratory equipment, instruments, reagents and/or supplies and required documentation. Follows all institution and department policies and procedures. Maintains a clean and orderly work environment. review work of students as assigned. Performs other duties within the scope of practice as assigned. What we need from you Education: 2 Year / Associate Degree or Service of the United States or the military service of the state, which may, where applicable, be accepted by the NYS Education Department for licensing purposes as equivalent education or training in lieu of all or part of an approved program, required Candidates must be qualified as a Clinical Laboratory Technician or Histotechnician in accordance with New York State Department of Health regulations required Licensure by NYS SED or licensure eligible with a limited permit or limited license as a Clinical Laboratory Technician or Histotechnician, required Limited Permit is granted to individuals that meet the educational requirements for licensure except for the licensing examination which must be taken within one year from the issuance of a limited permit. Limited License is granted to individuals who are working in the lab completing the education and examination requirements necessary to be licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Technician or Histotechnician. Limited licenses cannot be renewed and will not be valid beyond September 1, 2016 Experience: Minimum 1 year experience in standard histology laboratory methodologies, required Expereince in a clinical laboratory, preferred Licensure/Certifications: Must have one of the following licenses, required Licensure by NYS SED as a Clinical Laboratory Technician Licensure by NYS SED as a Certified Histological Technician Licensure by NYS SED as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist Skills: Accuracy Communication Critical Thinking Logical Thinking Computer Skills Reliability Laboratory Skills Technical Skills Physical Requirements: Light Work - Exerting up to 20 lbs of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Pay Range Salary is based on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, training, and fair market evaluation based on industry standards. Pay Range Minimum: USD $32.00/Hr. Pay Range Maximum: USD $48.00/Hr.
