Summary This position is located at a Department of Veterans Affairs facility. The work includes the operation of gasoline, diesel, or electronic powered wheeled vehicles to haul cargo and fuel, transport passengers, or to perform snow removal and sanding/salting. The vehicles are driven in restricted traffic environments on Government installations, over public roads and highways, or under cross-country conditions. Responsibilities Major Duties Performing operator maintenance, such as checking fluid levels, replacing air filters and interior lights, checking tire pressure and hose connections and washing vehicle. Operating wheeled vehicles, wheel-mounted tractors; or engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler-type traction. Operating passenger buses regardless of gross vehicle weight. Driving vehicles in restricted traffic environments on government installations, over public roads and highways, or under cross-country conditions to include poor weather conditions. Performing other related duties Operating platform, van, stake and dump trucks, fuel trucks, and plow-equipped vehicles which have a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds up to 32,000 pounds. Some vehicles are equipped with air brakes. Vehicles are operated over uneven terrain, over improved/unimproved roads and through congested areas on both short and long hauls. Hauling cargo and fuel, transporting passengers, or tows/recovers equipment. During periods when not operating a vehicle or heavy equipment, operator will perform landscaping/grounds maintenance tasks to include manual labor. Operator will also perform light maintenance and repair on gasoline-powered landscaping equipment. Skill and Knowledge Factors Skill in operating busses, platform trucks, van trucks, dump trucks, shuttle vans that have a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds up to 32,000 pounds. Knowledge of restrictions on routes. Knowledge of Federal, State, and installation safety regulations regarding the transport of hazardous material. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The employee exerts moderate physical effort in operating, turning, backing, and controlling vehicles which carry heavy loads and a large number of people. Vehicles are operated in all types of traffic and weather conditions on public roads and there is exposure to the danger of serious accidents. The employee drives in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange system. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience.
