Job Summary The Workplace English Instructor (Temporary Professional) will plan, deliver, and evaluate learner-centered ESOL classes for frontline UMass workers. This part-time position teaching in-person classes with The Partnership for Workplace Education program takes place at our Amherst campus. Essential Functions Assists the Workplace English team in developing and implementing the classes to serve eligible custodial and culinary employees. Participates in recruiting and registration of UMass employees at their workplace. Organizes and teaches two classes a semester using participatory principles to deliver content focused on workplace language interactions, tools, and general communication needs. Prepares required class plans and reports. Assists in needs assessment, formulation of program objectives, and relevant research as needed. Trains student volunteers to work with learners outside class. Conducts periodic class evaluations and overall learning effectiveness. Participate in weekly staff meetings as well as program-wide meetings, as needed. Works actively to ensure that all programs are conducted in compliance with federal, state, and University Affirmative Action policies. Other Functions Provides instruction at multiple levels in one class. Provides instruction in all four language domains: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Works collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness. In the performance of work, take initiative, and operate with self-direction. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure) Bachelor's degree with a minimum of three years ESOL teaching experience and/or equivalent experience teaching adults. Excellent interpersonal and group processing skills. Excellent teaching skills. Highly organized, able to manage multiple tasks at once, and attentive to detail. Knowledge and demonstrated ability implementing adult education theories and practices with diverse audiences. Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure) Masters or Doctorate in TESOL or Bilingual Teaching Program. Ability to speak Nepali, Tibetan, Cambodian, Vietnamese, Spanish and/or Farsi. Physical Demands/Working Conditions Typical office environment. Additional Details Learn more about the UMass Partnership for Worker Education Program at Work Schedule Monday - Friday, 20 hours per week, must be available to teach classes in the evening after regular work hours, schedule to be determined. This position is temporary and non-benefited, and will be active from September 22, 2024 through May 17, 2025. Salary Information $32.66 per hour.
