Title: Associate Chair for Biomedical Engineering Department: Bio-Medical Engineering Reports To: The Department Chair Position Type: Faculty Position Summary: The Biomedical Engineering Department (BME) at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is seeking applications for an Associate Chair to help lead the academic mission and goals of the department. This position will assist the department chair with the growth and diversity of our undergraduate and graduate programs as well as accreditation. The position will be commensurate with the candidates experience and qualifications at the rank of Associate/Full Professor beginning the 23-24 academic year. Applications are encouraged from candidates whose background and experience fit and can benefit from research synergies within the department. Research specialties of interest include neuro-rehabilitation engineering (including biorobotic design and fabrication, and neural engineering) and injury biomechanics (including nervous system injury, computational and experimental biomechanics, biomaterials and tissue engineering). We are seeking individuals with a strong interest and experience in the development of a research training and mentorship program for students. NJIT is an R1 research institution that prioritizes undergraduate education and has made significant efforts to provide research opportunities to students through an Undergraduate Research and Innovation program The BME department has a strong collaborative research program and a long track record of including students in research including the Center for Rehabilitation Robotics centers.njit.edu/rehabilitation, the Center for Injury Biomechanics, Materials and Medicine (centers.njit.edu/cibm3), and a state-of-the-art Motion Capture Lab, A 20,000 square-foot Makerspace is a venue where students test ideas, visualize and construct projects, and apply complex technologies, machines, and materials used in state-of-the-art manufacturing. Applicants with experience in leading scientific and educational research programs are encouraged to apply. Previous experience in the administration of an engineering undergraduate program and with ABET accreditation is strongly preferred. This faculty search will focus on the ability of the candidate to lead the department in the development of a research training and mentorship program for students. This task will include leading the development of federal agencies and private foundations for training proposals with the full support of the department and Dean of the College. Essential Functions: Candidates are expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Biomedical Engineering, to conduct research and provide service to the department, college and university. Candidates are also required to assist the department chair with the growth and diversity of our undergraduate and graduate programs as well as accreditation. Additional Functions: Assistance with recruiting of new faculty and graduate students; outreach activities to other universities and professional associations. Prerequisite Qualifications: A Ph.D/D.Sc degree in biomedical engineering or closely related field. High quality scholarly achievements and a commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education. Holders of this faculty position are expected to generate a significant externally-funded research program in their areas of specialization. At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
