Apply for Job Job ID362650 LocationTwin Cities Job FamilySupplemental Employee Full/Part TimePart-Time Regular/TemporaryRegular Job Code0001 Employee ClassCivil Service Add to Favorite Jobs Email this Job About the Job The Division of Biomaterials and the Minnesota Dental Research Center for Biomaterials and Biomechanics (MDRCBB) at the University of Minnesota is seeking a Biomaterials Engineer to support their research activities.The candidate will have the opportunity to become part of a team working with award-winning and internationally recognized faculty who conductstate-of-the-art experimental, theoretical, and numerical research on dental biomaterials and biomechanics.This individual will support and aid faculty who are conducting basic, applied and clinical research by developing project and laboratory-based protocols, and designing and building apparatus for experiments.Thisposition willalso be responsibleforstudenttraining aswellasliaising with industrial sponsors. This position will include, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities: Assistfacultywith designing and settingupexperiments for Division's and Center's research and industrial projects Coordinate with faculty the development of new experiments/modifications of existing experiments in collaboration with other individuals in the School of Dentistry Equipment troubleshooting Training of staff and students on the use of equipment and apparatus Liaise with industrial sponsors on their R&D needs Qualifications Required Qualifications A Bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, mechatronics engineering, or related field, and four years of relevant work experience or an advanced degree plus two years of work experience or a combination of related education and work experienceto equal eight years. Experience with experimental methods in imaging, profiling, materials characterization, and structural testing. Hands-on skills to build, repair, and maintain apparatus for lab experiments. Familiar with scientific equipment such as universal testing machines, hardness testers, rheometers, high-speed cameras, SEMs, and micro-CTs. Circuits: must have hands on experience building and testing circuits; an understanding of analog and digital circuits and filters; and experience with optical sensors, accelerometers, LVDTs and strain gauges. Must have experience with computer programming and instruments for data acquisition. Data Analysis and Statistics: must be familiar with statistics, fitting techniques and ANOVA. Previous experience working with students. Preferred Qualifications and Experience Master's degree with proven ability to perform job Courses taken in: Multivariable calculus Microfluidics Engineering materials Structural mechanics Systems and control Experience in: Data analysis: signal processing techniques such as Fourier Decomposition, Convolution and Deconvolution, Correlation techniques, and smoothing algorithms. Mechanical testing: measurement of elastic modulus, static and fatigue strength, hardness, fracture toughness, viscosity, etc. Basic machine shop experience: familiar with drill press, lathe, and mill. Experience with GPIB and Ethernet communication interfaces, and LabVIEW programming. About the Department The University of Minnesota School of Dentistry is the state's only dental school and the only dental school in the northern tier of states between Wisconsin and the Pacific Northwest. We are a regional resource to five states for dental education, consulting services, patient treatment, and ongoing continuing dental education. We educate dentists, dental specialists, dental therapists, dental hygienists, dental educators and research-scientists. We offer advanced degree programs in seven ADA-recognized specialties: endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics and TMD and orofacial pain. We educate scholars in oral biology, dental hygiene and oral health for older adult . Dentists from other countries who wish to practice in the United States matriculate through our Program for Advanced Standing Students. Learners have the option to pursue a Masters in Public Health or a PhD alongside their DDS degree. We are the only dental hygiene program in the state associated with a dental school. Offering programs at the baccalaureate and master of science level, our integrated program prepares oral health professionals to collaborate from their first day in the profession. We became the first dental school in the nation to educate dental therapists in 2009. Dental therapists perform basic preventative services, drill and restore teeth for children and adults and remove primary teeth under the supervision of a licensed dentist. As of 2023, we have graduated 91 dental therapists from the program. Our work affects virtually every person in Minnesota. We educate approximately 73% of the state's practicing dentists, 68% of licensed dental therapists, and 49% of dental hygiene educators. Our researchers develop and test restorative materials used by dentists around the world. We provide critical oral health care with more than 100,000 patient visits in our campus clinics and more than 16,000 patient visits at outreach sites in underserved communities throughout the state.
