Warthesen Food Processing Center- Pilot Plant Department of Food Science and Nutrition Title: Researcher 1 Job Code: 8352R1 Class: Civil Service Appointment: 100% Department: Dept. of Food Science Nutrition Office Location: St. Paul Campus Job summary We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Food Processing Specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in food processing, with a keen understanding of food safety principles. This position requires the ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and ensure the highest standards of work ethics and timeliness in all tasks. About The Joseph J. Warthesen Food Processing Center (Pilot Plant) The pilot plant is a part of the Food Science and Nutrition department in the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences. The pilot plant offers advanced food product research and teaching facilities to support both academic and industry needs in process and product development. In addition, the pilot plant manufactures dairy products such as cheese and ice cream, which are available for sale to consumers through our sales room. Responsibilities Research (50%): Set up, start up, operate, clean, shut down and clean equipment commonly used in food processing (e.g., cream separator, homogenizer, clarifier, extruder, spray dryer). Work on a regular basis with undergraduate and graduate students to assemble, operate, and clean food processing equipment. Perform various analyses such as fat, moisture, salt, pH, and particle size on products produced in the pilot plant. Assist with conducting research and production trials for both external and internal clients. Support the production of food ingredients as part of departmental research. Demonstrate unit operations for teaching labs and short courses. Dairy Production for retail sale (30%): Support the production of dairy foods (cheese and ice cream) intended for retail sale. Ensure that all dairy production meets quality and safety standards. Coordinate with other team members to ensure timely delivery and availability of products. Prepare products for the retail store, including cutting, packaging, pricing, and stocking. Food Safety Program (20%): Implement and maintain food safety protocols in the pilot plant. Ensure compliance with state and federal food safety regulations and standards. Conduct regular safety audits and inspections. Train students and visitors on food safety practices and procedures. Qualifications Required Qualifications BS in Food Science or related field or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four years A minimum 1 year of experience in the food processing Familiarity with food processing and food safety principles Must be able to work independently as well as in teams, managing priorities and urgency, with emphasis on precision and timeliness Knowledge of physical, chemical, and microbial safety protocols for food processing facility Sufficient computer knowledge, including proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) Preferred Qualifications Experience with supervising and training of students Experience in and passion for cheesemaking Food safety certifications, such as PCQI, HACCP, FSPCA, SQF or a willingness to obtain these certifications within 2 years of employment Demonstrated organizational and oral/written communication skills Demonstrated interpersonal skills Demonstrated problem-solving skills About the Department Benefits Working at the University At the University of Minnesota, you'll find a flexible work environment and supportive colleagues who are interested in lifelong learning.
