S&T Process Engineering Research Director - JR2422711 DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES: S&T Process Engineering Research Director PPG Industries Allison Park The Process Engineering Research Director leads the Corporate S&T Resin Process Engineering Lab Teams to optimize new and existing resin technologies for optimized process efficiencies aligned with PPG resin manufacturing assets by using new and existing resin laboratory capabilities. Additionally, you will be responsible for enhancing and developing new methods for resin manufacturing for our resins. You will report to the Global Synthesis & Pilot Director and functionally to the Global Resin Manufacturing Director. The number of people assigned to the segment/technology includes 10+ BS/MS/PhD Engineers, Chemists, and Technicians. Key Responsibilities 1. Lab Management and Strategy: + Align with global resin operational excellence objectives. + Manage, design, and set strategies for PPG's new/existing S&T Resin Process Engineering capability laboratories. + Develop and use state-of-the-art design resin laboratory setups to and use computer modeling to emulate PPG's network of global resin reactors and dispersion systems. + Improve efficiencies with new and existing resins and scale up using new and established process and design engineering techniques, including state-of-the-art data capture and in-situ measuring. + Improve resin failure analysis (PFMEA/DFMEA). + Establish important operational goals and work plans for the respective teams being managed. Support Resin Technology Development: Partner with Core R&D synthesis chemists and Pilot Development Center Process Engineers. Design and implement process optimization and robustness work for all newly developed resin technologies to allow successful transfer to pilot scale manufacturing reactors and commercial scales. Promote Collaboration: Foster a culture of collaboration within the global synthesis labs and global resin process engineering teams. Share knowledge, insights, and best practices to assist global S&T synthesis leads with successful resin scale-up and commercialization. Support Global Resin Manufacturing: Serve as an important member of the Global Resin Manufacturing team. Provide chemical engineering insights and opportunities to use the Resin Process Engineering function. Improve identified deficiencies with existing resin technology and recommend asset modifications for improved robustness of PPG resins in general-purpose reactors. Improve New/Alternative Ways of Working: Develop and manage new/alternative resin reactor designs. Duplicate these designs in the CIC Resin Process Engineering lab to prove process feasibility and support resin development. Communication and Stakeholder Management: Interact with senior management and executives from technical and manufacturing departments. Provide suggestions for process optimization improvements. Intellectual Property: Identify intellectual property opportunities associated with resin process innovation (internal and external). Create an IP landscape and recommend a patent strategy where possible. Team and Talent Development: Build a highly engaged team through coaching, recruiting, onboarding, and personal growth discussions. Remove barriers for success, provide recognition, plan for talent and succession, and encourage PPG Way behaviors. Safety: Maintain an exceptional understanding of safe operating procedures and behaviors globally. Proactively promote safe operating procedures and behaviors among peers and team members in the laboratory and manufacturing settings. Seek safe operating information for major changes or unfamiliar lab operations. Qualifications BS/MS/Ph.D. in Engineering (Chemical preferred or equivalent) 10+ years of proven experience in synthetic and/or scale up resin manufacturing including leadership roles 5 or more years of lab synthesis/engineering lead with proven success in product commercialization and/or resin manufacturing Detailed knowledge of resin manufacturing reactors and processes Broad coatings, plastics, or thermoplastics industry knowledge Ability to manage complexity and ambiguity PPG provides equal opportunity to all candidates and employees.
