S&T Research Chemist, Entry - JR2423923 DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES: As a S&T Research Chemist, Entry, you will support the PPG Silica Pilot Plant to lead new precipitated silica technology scale-up and manufacturing process development. The Chemist will be a member of the PPG Silica R&D team and work with colleagues in R&D, Technical Service, and Manufacturing to develop and validate new precipitated silica products toward the goal of full-scale production and commercialization. The Chemist will ensure safe and efficient operation of the Silica Pilot Plant while achieving key deliverables and goals and driving continuous improvement. You will be seated at PPG's Monreoville, PA plant and report to the Research Manager . Key Responsibilities Promote and ensure safe work in the Silica Pilot Plant, including the operation of equipment, handling of chemicals, etc. You will learn and apply the main chemical concepts of precipitated silica technology to accelerate the development and scale-up of new silica products. Collaborate with Silica Process Technology to translate pilot-scale silica manufacturing capabilities and processes to Manufacturing, enabling the full-scale commercial production of new silica products. You will participate in ISO 9001 audits by the PPG Silica business and ensure all equipment, processes, and measuring devices under ISO 9001 certification remain compliant. Ensure Silica Pilot Plant compliance with PPG Environment, Health, and Safety requirements and housekeeping guidelines, including the handling of raw materials and experimental samples, proactive identification and mitigation of hazards and risks, and compliance with guidelines for waste disposal. You will support components of R&D projects and Manufacturing initiatives where the development of new precipitated silica manufacturing processes at the pilot scale is required. Solve technical problems through the application of appropriate scientific, experimental, and statistical methods. Support cross-functional communication and collaboration to ensure alignment on technical deliverables, timelines, progress, and future needs. Communicate technical conclusions through written and verbal summaries, reports, presentations, and updates. You will contribute ideas for innovative new silica technologies to enable new product development and customer base expansion. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a relevant technical field, such as Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Science, or an Engineering discipline with a background in chemistry. 1 to 3 years of work experience in a chemical laboratory setting Commitment to safe work practices, including following all laboratory procedures and contributing to the maintenance of high safety standards. Experience following standard industrial Environment, Health, and Safety practices and working in the 5S System (or similar workplace organization system) to maximize worker efficiency and safety.
