Collaborate with cross-functional divisions to develop automotive body structures and components in the Underbody Design department that meet or exceed customer expectations while balancing vehicle performance, styling, marketability, manufacturing, profitability, and other design constraints & considerations. Design responsibilities may include both structural and/or styled parts in the engine room, floor, and bumper areas utilizing a variety of materials (steel, aluminum, plastics, composites, etc.) as well as manufacturing processes (stamping, injection molding, extrusion, casting, etc.). Additional responsibilities may include researching & developing new technologies for future vehicle applications. Approximate breakdown of day-to-day duties is as follows: Create and/or manage creation of 3D models, layouts, and 2D drawings using CATIA (20%); provide technical expertise, guidance, and mentoring to less experienced designers by helping to set establish schedule, scope, priorities, etc. for project activities (20%); correlate and negotiate with internal Honda contacts including other design departments, test departments, styling studio, factories and purchasing (20%); lead part development activities with suppliers, setting design targets and confirming prospect to achieve requirements (20%); support part and vehicle verification, including developing countermeasures as necessary (10%); and estimate and manage part cost, weight, and investment throughout development, including review of supplier quotes (10%). Minimum requirements: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering; 5 years of experience in engineering, related to product design & development; 5 years of experience in automotive design; 5 years of experience utilizing CATIA to create detailed 3D surface models for automotive body parts; 5 years of experience utilizing CATIA to create detailed 2D drawings and specifications for automotive body parts; 5 years of experience in documenting engineering analysis & decision making logic using PowerPoint & Excel; 5 years of experience working with spot-welded steel white body construction methods and evaluating and applying these methods based on specific vehicle targets; 5 years of experience working with SUV and Light-truck vehicle dynamic and safety requirements and determining and developing the most cost and weight efficient white body construction to achieve these requirements; 5 years of experience controlling complete vehicle packaging; 5 years of experience evaluating styling concept sketches and clay models to access feasibility of white body construction; 3 years of experience benchmarking automotive industry white body construction methods; 3 years of experience assigning and managing work by directing, delegating, and confirming results of engineering resources; 3 years of experience of crossfunctional collaboration to create, solve, and countermeasure engineering solutions for Upper body designs; and 3 years of experience of cost calculations and correlation with purchasing department, factory, and suppliers.
