The successful candidate will be responsible for fabrication and characterization of first-of-a-kind Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) diagnostic components using cutting-edge high-powered laser systems. The IFT division is a lead fabricator of precision components in support of fusion ignition experiments at the national labs.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for the fabrication and characterization of precise components with micron-sized features using custom open-architecture lasers as well as commercial laser systems. Responsible for oversight of laser machining systems. Duties include laser system diagnosis and configuration, optical alignment, and procurement of optical and laser components and materials. Characterization duties include operation of stereo microscopes, x-ray imaging systems, coordinate measurement microscopes, automated microscopes and other highly-accurate metrology instruments. Obtains, analyzes and presents various forms of data, reports and presentations. Maintains and updates production order book and tracks production throughput and yield of repeat and new components. Communicates regularly with customers, team and management to relay production schedule, system status, and design tolerances while considering available budget, timelines and resources. Communicates regularly with customers to discuss new laser machined products and techniques to meet the requirements and timelines Works with resident staff and other engineering, scientific and technical personnel from a variety of laboratory institutions and fields. Diagnoses operational problems in laser systems and production through root cause analysis techniques. Proposes and implements engineering solutions accordingly. Designs, builds and/or procures necessary tools, fixtures and components required to improve laser machining capabilities and production efficiencies. Responsible for quality assurance, packaging and shipment of precision components with attention to detail, cleanliness and accuracy. Works in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices. Responsible for the fabrication, characterization and delivery of unique planar components enabling cutting-edge experiments and diagnostics at laser facilities such as the National Ignition Facility at LLNL and the OMEGA facilities at LLE.
