Position Summary The Outreach Specialist’s focus is to locate and engage unhoused individuals, at risk persons and families assisting them in connecting to services in the community. They will work closely with the outreach team to engage regularly out in Jackson County to identify individuals who could use support in accessing services and help stabilize their situation. They will attend regular community partner meetups, meetings, and outreach efforts to best reach at risk persons and families. Additionally, they will be working collaboratively with the outreach team and all programs, community partners and local entities to effectively serve the community to create a wraparound approach for services. Position Duties & Responsibilities Identify unsheltered persons through direct outreach activities and through reports/referrals from shelters, Law enforcement, churches, social service providers and others. May initiate contact and establish a working interaction with unsheltered and at-risk persons for the purpose of helping with attaining adequate shelter and access to needed services. Willingness to work outdoors in inclement weather, in more remote areas of the county and in unhoused encampments in attempts to offer services. Make referrals to appropriate community resources. Establish and maintain positive, productive working relationships with mental health programs, shelter programs, Law enforcement (and other local officials), and providers of services and resources to at risk persons. Participate in appropriate workshops, trainings, and meetings as directed. May conduct presentations giving in-depth descriptions of programs and provide information on other programs’ resources. Maintain complete client records, daily activity logs, mileage logs, and other reports as directed. Take appropriate action to deal with any emergency. Work with the Lead outreach specialist, Outreach Supervisor, Director of support services and many other members of management. Attend regular training and certifications for the Medford severe weather shelter. Assist in a leadership role during severe weather shelter activations as a main point of contact and leadership during operations. Work flexible hours during Severe weather activations such as nights and weekends. Regularly engage with the outreach team in community outreach events. Create relationships with community partners learning their programs to better serve in a wraparound approach for participants. Position Requirements Ability to maintain patience and tact when dealing with confused and/or defensive individuals as needed to provide information or instruction. Ability to interact effectively with a variety of individuals and groups from varying educational, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds to include listening, sensitivity to the other's feelings, needs, point of view, tact, and courtesy in expressing opinions or ideas. Projecting a positive image of the organization and recognizing opportunities to enhance community relations. Ability to work flexible hours. Willingness and ability to adjust to changing conditions or priorities. In addition to working in a typical office environment, the Outreach Specialist will be required to work in areas inhabited by homeless people, including working in dirty environments and dealing with people who may become difficult or irate. Must be willing to work in poor weather. Must be willing to work the occasional night or weekend shift. Must be willing to work in a leadership role at the Server weather shelter during activations. Proven ability to consistently provide ideas, opinions, or information in an articulate, professional way. Ability to actively listen to others and demonstrate understanding of other points of view. This position is required to have a work-issued cell phone (in lieu of a cell phone other similar options are available per the agency Cell Phone Election Form). A valid Oregon driver’s license with a record that is acceptable under the organizations insurance policies.
