Are you living your life's work? Summary: The Administrative Supervisor Nursing is responsible and accountable for the administrative supervision of the hospital in the absence of senior leadership. She/he functions as in-house administrator utilizing the hospital administrator as needed for consultation. She/he is responsible and accountable for the management of nursing services and the quality and safety of nursing care provided across the organization. The Nursing Supervisor incorporates responsibilities of staff management, patient/family/visitor relations and interdepartmental clinical and non-clinical activities to ensure quality, safe patient care and departmental operations. He/ she is responsible for patient flow and bed assignment throughout Penn Medicine Princeton Health. Coordinates inter-hospital transfers. He/she in collaboration with the administrator on call initiates the incident command center and reallocates initial resources as appropriate to the crisis/demand. Responsibilities: Administrative Responsibilities: Notifies Nursing Leadership and Administrator on call for an actual or evolving patient/visitor or staff issue that requires immediate action to prevent harm/injury or any disruption of hospital operations that negatively impacts patient safety or care. Demonstrates understanding of situations that require legal, risk, and public relations input and counsel and acts accordingly. Acts as a resource person/liaison and effectively interacts with physicians, staff, patients and significant others to address and document/follow up on concerns/issues. Provides management through the interpretation and access to nursing and hospital policies and procedures. Aware of Joint Commission, CMS, DOH and other regulatory standards to support patient care. Participates in development of nursing strategic plan and annual operational goals and objectives. Assists in the consistency of communication of hospital and nursing operations through unit based and departmental rounding. Responds to emergent situations (e.g Rapid Response, Code Stroke, Code Blue, Code Red, etc). Coordinates and/or assists with organ procurement. Participates in Shared Governance councils/co-councils as leader/co-leader or participant. Staffing Responsibilities: Identifies the mix and quantity of nursing personnel needed to provide safe, quality patient care for the overall operation of the unit and for each shift on a daily basis based upon patient needs, staffing matrix, and staff competencies. Reallocates staff as needed to provide safe, quality of care across the nursing organization. Adjusts staffing as needed with attention to financial objectives as appropriate. Assigns companions as needed to assure patient safety. Identifies patients at risk for elopement and appropriately assigns resources and designated unit. Collects sick/FMLA calls and adjusts staffing accordingly. Notes trends and issues and communicates accordingly with the Nurse Manager. Proactively participates in staffing analysis for weekend coverage notes and communicates trends to Directors of Nursing/CNO. Assures balanced and appropriate staffing across nursing organization. Plays key role in bed coordination and allocation during periods of surge alerts. Alerts nurse manager of staffing needs that are not able to be addressed daily through the staffing office. Provides direct patient care as clinically competent and indirect patient care/support as needed in appropriate/emergent situations. Human Resources/Organizational Management Evaluates the performance of unit personnel and communicates with the Nurse Managers/Educators. Identifies learning needs of staff and as appropriate, participate in the development of shift-specific education and evaluation. Identifies potential disciplinary concerns (performance, behavior, attendance/punctuality), disciplines as appropriate and communicates/follows up with Nurse Manager. Participates in the process of managing concerns of staff diversion and potential staff incapacity in the absence of departmental leadership. Holds staff accountable to quality, safe patient care through compliance with approved policies and procedures. Participates in staff and peer evaluations providing feedback and opportunities for improvement. Bed Flow/Coordination: Manages bed coordination and bed allocation across the hospital. Communicates census and bed flow plans daily at huddle. Coordinates and communicates patient admissions to unit-based nurse leadership and removes barriers to expedite flow and assure admission timeframe targets. Collaborates and assigns bed of transfers from other hospitals to Penn Medicine Princeton Health. Determines and communicates need to hold patients in non-bedded units (e.g. TCU, PACU, post procedure areas etc.) based on census and discharges. Credentials: Registered Nurse - NJ (Required) Registered Professional Nurse, issued by the N.J. State Board of Nursing.National Certification in area of specialty preferred Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (Required) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (Required) Education or Equivalent Experience: Bachelor of Arts or Science (Required) Education Specialization:NursingEquivalent Experience:And 5+ years of experience as a registered nurse in an acute care setting required. Master of Arts or Science Education Specialization:NursingEquivalent Experience:Two or more years of experience in a leadership/management/hospital operations role preferred along with previous nursing supervisor experience preferred.
