The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (P.V.S.C.), a publicly-owned wastewater treatment facility located in Newark, New Jersey, is currently accepting applications for experienced Operators. Created in 1902, PVSC is the 5th largest facility of its kind in the United States, directly serving approximately 1.4 million residents in 48 municipalities located in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union Counties. The 140-acre plant is designed to treat an average of 330 million gallons per day (“mgd”) of wastewater with an annual average flow of approximately 241 mgd. Position Summary: Responsible for driving and operating various Line Operations vehicles, as well as maintaining and operating the component parts of the collection system. Education: High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required. Satisfactory completion of both the Basic Wastewater course and the Advanced Wastewater Collections course is required. Completion of Advanced Wastewater Treatment course is preferred. Requirements: Must have knowledge of the principles and methods used in the treatment and disposal of wastewater and biosolids, as well as understand and comprehend the related laws, rules and regulations. Must understand both the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions that need to be exercised in the conveyance of wastewater, as well as demonstrate the ability to learn and retain technical information. Mechanical and problem-solving aptitude, as well as computer literacy, is required. Must be able to read, write, communicate, and understand English sufficiently to perform the functions of the position and execute oral and written directions. Experience, License and Certification: Must have a valid New Jersey Driver's License. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B is required, however a CDL Class A preferred. NJDOT certified Traffic Control Coordinator certification is required. A New Jersey Collection System C2 license is required. A Wastewater Treatment S1 license is preferred. or must be actively pursuing a C2 license*. *(Actively pursuing is defined as taking the associated State license exam at least 2 times per year until the license is obtained.) Operator/Driver I - Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in collection system operations and maintenance required. Operator/Driver II - Minimum of six (6) years of experience in collection system operations and maintenance required. Operator/Driver III - Minimum of five (5) years of experience in collection system operations and maintenance are required. Physical Demands: Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation to ensure the health and safety of oneself and others is maintained. Must qualify for and possess the ability to perform entry into confined spaces while wearing proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as, but not limited to, canister and dust masks as well as SCBA ( Self Contained Breathing Apparatus). Perform physical activities that require considerable use of the arms, legs and whole body such as climbing (including ladders), lifting up to 50 lbs., balancing, walking, stooping and handling heavy objects. Working Conditions: Workers are employed in conditions associated with a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system and will be required to work indoors and outdoors.
