SummaryThe Chief Accounting Officer (CAO) is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing all accounting and financial reporting functions of a P&C insurance holding company with four subsidiaries. The CAO ensures compliance with both Statutory (STAT) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) accounting and reporting standards while maintaining the integrity of financial data, internal controls, and regulatory compliance. This role requires a strong technical accounting background, experience in the insurance industry, and the ability to lead a high-performing accounting team.Essential Duties & FunctionsReasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Specifically, this role will:Financial Accounting & Reporting:Oversee the preparation and accuracy of STAT and GAAP financial statements for the holding company and subsidiaries. Ensure timely and accurate quarterly and annual regulatory filings (e.g., NAIC statutory reporting, state regulatory filings, and SEC compliance once applicable). Manage the consolidation of financial reports across the holding company and subsidiaries. Maintain accounting policies and procedures in accordance with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.General Ledger Administration & Integrations:Oversee general ledger (GL) management, including chart of accounts, journal entries, and account reconciliations. Lead system integrations for financial reporting, including automated workflows and ERP systems. Implement best practices for GL maintenance, ensuring consistency and efficiency in financial reporting.Audit & Compliance:Manage the annual external audit process, acting as the primary liaison with external auditors. Ensure compliance with internal controls over financial reporting (ICFR), including SOX compliance once required. Develop and maintain an effective internal control framework to mitigate financial and operational risks. Oversee regulatory audits and examinations from insurance regulators and other governing bodies.Day-to-Day Accounting & Operational Finance:Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process. Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, premium accounting, reserves accounting, reinsurance accounting, and investment accounting functions. Provide financial insights and analysis to support strategic decision-making. Proven ability to manage audits, regulatory reporting, and internal controls. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Excellent leadership, communication, and team-building abilities. Experience working with NAIC reporting, statutory filings, and insurance regulatory compliance.Required Education and Experience:Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field. 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role within the P&C insurance industry. Strong knowledge of STAT and GAAP accounting standards for insurance companies. Experience with financial systems, general ledger management, and system integrations.Preferred Education and Experience:Master's Degree or CPA. Experience with Workday, Adaptive Insights and FloQast. Background in reinsurance accounting, investment accounting, or intercompany eliminations.
