About the Role Our client is hiring a VP of Engineering to lead and scale their engineering team as they expand. The role involves applied AI, intelligent agents, and sophisticated data ingestion pipelines that extract, structure, and surface high-value insights. The ideal candidate has deep experience building scalable systems, working with large datasets, and leveraging ML/AI to extract meaning from structured and unstructured data. They are seeking someone who has hired and developed top-tier engineers, understands data-intensive applications, and thrives in a fast-moving, execution-focused startup environment. Responsibilities Architect and scale the core data platform to handle tens of millions of entities while ensuring high availability and reliability. Design and implement AI-driven data extraction systems to surface intelligence from vast amounts of structured and unstructured sources. Optimize data pipelines for real-time retrieval and processing of information from a wide range of sources, including publicly available but hard-to-access datasets. Contribute as a hands-on engineer while also playing a critical role in hiring, mentoring, and growing the technical team. Establish best practices for engineering execution, technical decision-making, and system reliability as the company scales. Collaborate closely with the leadership team to align engineering priorities with business strategy, ensuring technology directly drives growth. Manage an engineering team today of 4, with plans to grow to 15 or more in the next 12 months. What They're Looking For Although this is a "VP" role, this is very much a hands-on coding role with the expectation to grow more into management over time as the team grows. Experience building and scaling complex data systems"”ideally with experience in search, ranking, or applied ML/AI. A background in high-performance backend engineering, with expertise in Python, Go, or similar languages used for large-scale systems. Familiarity with distributed systems, data indexing, and knowledge graph technologies. A track record of hiring and developing top engineering talent, especially in data-focused roles. Experience working in fast-moving, high-growth startups, ideally within AI, search, or data-driven industries. Strong product intuition and the ability to make data-driven decisions that directly impact customer success.
