Under the direction of the General Counsel, the Deputy General Counsel provides substantive legal and administrative leadership in the service of the California Public Utilities Commission's mission, the CPUC Legal Division's mission, and its various client groups. The Deputy General Counsel oversees, leads, and manages: a portion or all of the nine sections of attorneys in the Division depending on enterprise or Division needs; and Legal Division's administrative needs, including Division strategic planning and policy development, budget and compliance, and performance management and other personnel matters. This is an executive level position directly involved in leading the Legal Division's 125+ employees. Minimum Requirements: Must be an active member in good standing of the California State Bar. Working Conditions This position may be filled in San Francisco, Sacramento, or Los Angeles. Positions at the CPUC may be eligible for telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, and subject to meeting the telework eligibility criteria. Occasional in-person attendance will be required based on operational needs. Regular travel within the State of California, including regular in-person attendance at Division and Commission meetings in San Francisco, Sacramento, and as needed out of state. Department Information The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) regulates various aspects of electric and natural gas, water, communications, and rail and other transportation services in California. The CPUC employs economists, engineers, administrative law judges, accountants, lawyers, and safety and transportation specialists. The Public Advocate's Office of the PUC represents consumers in CPUC proceedings. The Legal Division is comprised of over 135 attorneys and staff who support the complex and high-impact work of the Commission. The Legal Division is directed by statute to represent and appear for the people of the State of California in all actions and proceedings involving any question under the Public Utilities Code.
