What will you be doing: Reporting directly to the Chief Data Officer, the VP of Data Science will be a critical leader in supporting and advancing the four key pillars of the Data Science function: Prices, Gen AI, Curves, and Analytics initiatives. This role will oversee the development, implementation, and governance of data-driven and AI solutions across these areas. You will lead a talented team of data scientists and engineers, playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of data-driven decision making at our organization. Key Areas of Focus: Prices: This role involves the direct supervision of the existing price assessment processes, ensuring the highest standards of accuracy and reliability in providing critical market data to our clients. The VP will champion initiatives to introduce efficiencies and minimize production costs while maintaining low correction rates. You will also lead the team in developing and maintaining robust, automated processes using Price Studio and database technologies to gather data, calculate prices, and produce reports and data feeds. Gen AI: This is a critical area where the VP will be a visionary leader and champion. You will be responsible for driving research, development and implementation of cutting-edge Gen AI and NLP tools for internal and external clients. This includes but is not limited to the development of robust Large Language Model (LLM) applications. You will lead the team in exploring opportunities to use Gen AI to streamline data processing, enhance existing products, and develop new data-driven offerings. You will be expected to stay at the forefront of innovation in the fast-evolving Gen AI landscape, evaluating new algorithms and approaches, and incorporating the most promising into our data science strategy. Curves: The VP will support the operations and product development for Forward Curves and Possibility Curves in the Americas. You will collaborate closely with CDO and the global DS Leadership team to identify new market opportunities for curve development and contribute to the commercialization of these products by supporting sales and marketing initiatives. The role also encompasses identifying and mitigating operational risks and ensuring the team adheres to consistent methodologies and standards to guarantee high quality product delivery. DS Studio: This is another critical area where the VP will be a visionary leader and champion for the deployment of the DS Studio within staff and with external clients. A key responsibility is leading the development of the company-wide data science studio for enhanced data exploration, modelling, and insight generation leveraging cutting edge AI and ML capabilities. Analytics: This area encompasses the support and development of all Analytics initiatives, including Fertiliser Analytics, Petrochemical Analytics, and outlooks. You will work closely with stakeholders across Sectors, Technology, Editorial, Marketing, and Sales, and be responsible for leading a team of Data Scientists and Data Engineers to execute on a strategic roadmap migrating existing models and processes into the Data Science studio. Key Responsibilities: Team Leadership: Create an inspiring and high-performing team environment, fostering open communication, and actively mentoring and developing team members. Delegate tasks effectively, set clear deadlines, monitor performance, and provide constructive feedback. Strategic Vision: Develop and execute the data science strategy for the Houston office in alignment with overall global objectives. Operational Excellence: Oversee the day-to-day operation of data science functions, ensuring high-quality output and efficient processes. Project Management: Lead and manage complex data science projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and meet business requirements using Agile methods where appropriate. Data Governance: Establish and enforce rigorous data and model governance standards, including SR11-7 requirements. Ensure the reliability, transparency, and accuracy of data and analytics. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate effectively with stakeholders from Sectors, Technology, Editorial, Marketing, and Sales to understand their needs and translate them into impactful data science solutions. Innovation and Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for improvements in data science and AI methodologies, staying abreast of the latest technological advancements and trends in data and machine learning. Product Commercialization: Contribute to the commercialization of Data Science products, supporting sales and marketing initiatives. Data Processing and Support: Lead support and development of data processing systems for price assessment, as well as providing data and systems support to the business. Data Quality and Monitoring: Responsible for building and maintaining the processes, rules, and thresholds to measure and monitor the quality of data used in price assessments, ensuring adherence to standards. Data Workflow Optimization: Design and implement strategic data workflow processes that are scalable, meet requirements for data and model governance (i.e., SR11-7) and optimise the throughput of model development. Skills and Experience: Master's degree or Ph.D. in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field. Minimum of 10+ years of experience in data science, including 5+ years in a leadership capacity, managing teams of data scientists and engineers. Proven experience in developing and implementing data science solutions in a business context. Deep expertise in statistical modelling, machine learning, and AI algorithms. Expertise in implementing and deploying Gen AI models, particularly using Large Language Models (LLMs). Experience with cloud-based data infrastructure and platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP). Proficiency in data warehousing techniques, ETL processes, and model development. Strong project management skills and experience with Agile methodologies. Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. Experience in the commodity or energy markets is a plus.
