Gardens and Landscape, Summer Part-Time, Temporary for Summer 2025 Introduction: George Washington's Mount Vernon Horticulture Department has an opening for a paid summer position that may have the potential of fulfilling an internship requirement for undergraduates in horticulture, landscape architecture, agriculture, botany, environmental science, or a related field. The person in this position supports the overall mission of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association and the Department to preserve, care for, and interpret the Association's historical, cultural, and natural resources while gaining practical, hands-on horticultural experience at this renowned historic site. Candidate must be dependable and highly motivated and will work alongside horticulture staff in all areas of the Mount Vernon Estate, including historic and non-historic gardens and grounds, the museum, the George Washington Presidential Library landscape, as well as in the surrounding woods. There will also be opportunities to take on independent projects as assigned by staff. Exposure to adverse weather conditions such as heat and humidity is to be expected, as well as periods of strenuous physical activity. The candidate will interact with visitors and is expected to behave and communicate in a manner that promotes and fosters a culture of teamwork and cooperation within the Horticulture department and throughout the Estate with co-workers, management, and volunteers. Work will be conducted in accordance with the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association procedures and guidelines. Compensation: $15/hour Expected Hours: The schedule is a 40-hour week, 6:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m., including one weekend day/week. Expected duties include, but are not limited to: * Planting, seed sowing, watering, and staking annuals, vegetables, and perennials. * Weeding and mulching. * Pruning grapes and ornamental vines, shrubs, and fruit trees. * Deadheading and seed collecting of perennials and annuals. * Harvesting produce. * Control of invasive species in woods. Requirements: Previous gardening experience and the ability to use hand tools and operate mowers, string trimmers, and blowers are a plus.
