Principal Scientist, External Programs Department: Lab Science Employment Type: Full Time Location: San Mateo, CA Description The Role: BigHat Biosciences is seeking an exceptional individual for a Principal* Scientist role on the External Programs team to serve as a program team lead and drive antibody discovery, design, optimization and characterization, in support of therapeutic programs with our external partners. This role reports directly to Emily Delaney (Senior Scientist II, External Programs). *At BigHat we believe in titles that commensurate with skill set, relative organizational impact, and value contribution; more or less experienced candidates are encouraged to apply, with the understanding that responsibilities and title would adjust as appropriate. Key Responsibilities Lead cross-functional project teams (including Data Science, AI/ML, Engineering, Protein Sciences, Automation) on the execution of rapid, iterative multi-objective optimization to identify high-value therapeutic antibodies through gold-standard assays. Effectively and regularly synthesize and communicate results and research activity to key decision makers and the broader BigHat team, as well as to external partners. Collaborate closely with BigHat leadership and other cross-functional team members to ensure a tight linkage between strategy, research, and development components. Develop strategies to generate and optimize novel antibodies that meet and exceed design requirements, as set forth in BigHat's collaborative external partnerships. Source, onboard, develop, and validate bespoke assays to assess in vitro cell-based functional activity of therapeutic antibody candidates. Deeply understanding target biology to better design antibodies that meet our candidate profile Lead in-depth data analysis of each design cycle to better leverage experimental and computational approaches to reach our design goals. About You Ph.D. in molecular or cell biology, immunology, or related fields. 3+ years of advanced research experience in an industry setting. Experience with antibody engineering and/or discovery. Exceptional written, verbal and visual communication skills. Experience presenting and communicating strategy and results to internal and external partners. Experience leading direct reports and teams. Experience in leading cross-functional project teams, including planning timelines, adhering to budgets, presenting interim key results internally and externally, is a plus. Strong scientific track record and publication record. Strong data analysis and interpretation skills. Experience working with large datasets. Expertise in mammalian cell culture, immunoassay, molecular techniques, cell-based assays, protein expression and characterization (e.g., kinetics, SEC). Experience with lab automation is a plus.
