Title: Seed Lab Coordinator #01030 State Role Title: Laboratory & Research Spec II Hiring Range: $42,905 - $62,000 annually Pay Band: 4 Agency: Virginia Department of Agriculture Location: SEED-METROLOGY-PROC FOOD Agency Website: Recruitment Type: General Public - G Job Duties The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking one qualified applicant to serve as the Virginia State Seed Laboratory in the Office of Plant Industry Services as the Seed Laboratory Coordinator. The Seed Lab Coordinator will coordinate with the Seed Lab Manager to ensure smooth operations of the Virginia State Seed Laboratory, including oversight and support for special testing, germination testing, the seed lab training program, seed purity testing, and LIMS systems oversight. Duties include performing purity and germination activities and ensuring protocols and procedures are being followed by seed analysts, provide training to newly hired analysts and ensure that training methods are in accordance with the Association of Official Seed Analyst (AOSA), provide management and oversight over the operation of the Laboratory Inventory Management System (LIMS), bringing any issues to the Seed Lab Manager's attention. The position will report to the Seed Laboratory located in the Department of Consolidated Laboratory Services in Richmond City. The position is not eligible for telework opportunities. Minimum Qualifications Candidate must have working knowledge of seed, seedling, and plant morphology. The candidate must be able to follow proscribed laboratory policies and interpret, apply and explain complex standards set by the Virginia Seed Law, Federal Seed Act and the AOSA. Comprehensive knowledge in seed or plant morphology, physiology, and/or taxonomy. Proven experience utilizing diagnostic and analytical procedures. Ability to research and develop methodology pertaining to genetic purity of seeds and germination protocols. Knowledge of Virginia Seed Law and Regulations and AOSA Rules for Testing Seed. Proven ability to train others on laboratory procedures, protocols, guidelines, or other standard operating procedures. Experience in using a laboratory information management system or a similar system. This position involves working around peanuts, wheat, dust and chemically treated seeds. Additional Considerations H.S. Diploma or equivalent required. AOSA Certification required. A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include knowledge of botany, biology, agronomy, horticulture or a related agricultural science.
