The Company Metropolis is an artificial intelligence company that uses computer vision technology to enable frictionless, checkout-free experiences in the real world. Today, we are reimagining parking to enable millions of consumers to just "drive in and drive out." We envision a future where people transact in the real world with a speed, ease and convenience that is unparalleled, even online. Tomorrow, we will power checkout-free experiences anywhere you go to make the everyday experiences of living, working and playing remarkable - giving us back our most valuable asset, time. The Role Metropolis is seeking a senior mechanical engineer to lead the design, validation, and test of electromechanical devices that power our field-deployed machine learning systems, cameras, IoT sensors, and access control systems. In this role, you will be responsible for the mechanical design, verification, test and deployment of new hardware platforms. This work includes fabrication of prototypes using additive and subtractive methods, creation of mechanical design drawing packages, management of BOMs, designing and executing mechanical test procedures, and performing general design verification activities. You will work closely with electrical, manufacturing, mechanical, operations, and software design engineers daily to ensure that our current and future products meet and exceed industrial best-practices. The ideal candidate has experience designing and analyzing mechanical and mechatronic systems, excels at analytical problem solving, is an expert using mechanical parametric design tools, and has first-hand experience supporting closely coupled electromechanical systems throughout all lifecycle phases. The candidate will contribute to the development of products from a human factors perspective including physical form and user interface design. You will have demonstrated experience working on closely coupled mechanical/electronic systems, especially those that incorporate substantial thermal and weatherproofing needs. The candidate should be familiar with mechanical drafting best-practices including GD&T. Candidates with experience designing optical systems such as cameras, displays, virtual reality headsets, etc. are encouraged to apply. Responsibilities Lead mechanical design and test activities for all current and future Metropolis hardware platforms. Conceptualize, prototype, and implement mechanical design solutions for new product design, product improvement, and product changes. Coordinate with manufacturing and deployment teams to ensure smooth transition as product designs are updated. Produce/check design layouts, detail drawings, assembly drawings, bills-of-material, tolerance studies (GDT) and parts lists. Create engineering reports documenting design efforts, verification plans, and test results. Manage relationships with external (contract) engineering teams. Requirements and Qualifications BS or MS in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience. 5+ years of experience as a mechanical engineer. Recent professional experience using commercial mCAD products such as Solidworks, Inventor, Creo, or Onshape. Professional or academic experience using FEA packages for mechanical stress/strain and thermal-fluid analysis. Experience or exposure to design philosophy for plastic/metal injection molded parts, casting, or other high-volume manufacturing modalities. Experience designing products with major optical components such as cameras or head-mounted displays. Basic understanding of computer programming in one or more modern languages (Python, Matlab, C, R, etc.). Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a proven ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences. Experience with common program management (MS Project, Visio, etc.) and productivity (Confluence, Jira, etc.) tools. Previous experience working inside innovative, high-growth environments is a plus. Role is hybrid on-site in Seattle, WA. When you join Metropolis, you'll join a team of world-class product leaders and engineers, building an ecosystem of technologies at the intersection of parking, mobility, and real estate. Our goal is to build an inclusive culture where everyone has a voice and the best idea wins. You will play a key role in building and maintaining this culture as our organization grows. The anticipated base salary for this position is $150,000.00 to $170,000.00 annually. The actual base salary offered is determined by a number of variables, including, as appropriate, the applicant's qualifications for the position, years of relevant experience, distinctive skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location of residence and/or place of employment.
