Overview The Milieu Supervisor - Counselor oversees therapeutic/counseling milieu and classroom programming, provides supervision, training, discipline, and evaluation for counselors, and supports direct care staff at Hampstead Hospital and Residential Treatment Facility (HHRTF). This role collaborates with senior management, physicians, and staff to develop and implement service objectives, standards, performance improvement, and safety management protocols. The Milieu Supervisor also plays a crucial role in hiring decisions and disciplinary actions, evaluating direct personnel and objectives, and providing direct supervision to Counselors and per diem staff. Responsibilities In conjunction with the Program Director and Nurse Manager, collaborates on developing and delivering clinical, therapeutic, and educational services across the continuum of services. Communicates HHRTF policies and procedures using a variety of formats (e.g., shift roll call, telephone conversations, emails, etc.) with staff, direct care providers, and external stakeholders and works collaboratively with those and other agencies to foster mutual respect and positive relationships. Communicate milieu issues to the Charge Nurse and Program Director. In collaboration with clinical and therapeutic staff, conducts and assists with risk assessments, de-escalates crises in the milieu, conducts process groups, and, as needed, ensures the efficacy of counselor group sessions that reflect treatment plans and goals via observation and follow-up. Provides group, classroom, and unit coverage and assistance with educational programming. Reviews input/feedback, escalated issues, or concerns from Senior Counselors, and takes appropriate actions. Ensures that courteous and safe interactions occur, that health and safety policies and procedures are followed, and that clinically appropriate interventions are being applied according to standards. Audits medical records and other documentation to ensure they follow all Joint Commission and Medicare standards as applicable. Supervises, trains, and evaluates the work performance of assigned subordinate counselors and support staff. Conducts performance evaluations to incorporate individual career goals and annual training plans to promote professional development and recommends personnel actions, including step increases, promotions, and disciplinary action. Establishes processes to track and confirm that staff completes all required annual training and any additional training as assigned. Monitors staff schedules and approves leave based on appropriate staffing levels. Performs duties associated with human resources conducted at the agency level, including recruitment, interviewing, hiring, disciplinary actions, and injury reporting. Promotes a culture of patient safety through reporting significant events, participation in safety training programs, and Performance Improvement activities. Provide patient-centered care that is resiliency and recovery-oriented, with a primary focus on the health and safety of patients. Demonstrate leadership by example through effective communication and oversight of the delivery of services in the milieu in collaboration with the Charge Nurse and Program Director. Participates in hospital safety training programs and Performance Improvement Activities (PIA). Qualifications * Master's degree from a recognized college or university with major study in social work, psychology, counseling, or a related behavioral science area. Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience. * Three years' experience in social work, clinical mental health counseling, or related field in a psychiatric in-patient or clinical environment, plus two years of supervisory experience in any occupational area. If related to the program area, the supervisory experience will count as part of the three years' total experience. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education. Required Licensure/Certifications * Must Obtain BLS Certification (within 30 days of hire) * Must Obtain CPI Certification (within 3 months of hire)
