Cary, North Carolina is seeking a knowledgeable and committed individual for our Athletic Field Maintenance Technician II position. Our field maintenance teams perform semi-skilled and skilled work to manage the maintenance and preparation of athletic fields. The Athletic Field Maintenance Technician II will be assigned to one of the "tournament-level" fields, such as Middle Creek and Thomas Brooks. The ideal candidate will possess a high level of technical knowledge in turf management and athletic field preparation that allows them to work independently with limited or no supervision. The individual must also be an excellent communicator able to professionally interact with community partners such as the Wake County School System, athletic associations and outside parties. The Athletic Facilities Maintenance Technician II is assigned to complex facilities that host regional and higher profile events, such as college teams and required to operate with a higher level of technical knowledge and independence. An Athletic Field Maintenance Technician II may be the only maintenance personnel on duty during events and may lead other facility maintenance workers, temporary and/or seasonal staff, or facility attendants. Work is performed with general supervision from a Facilities Coordinator and/or Athletic Field Maintenance Crew Leader. This role may require weekend work or flexed schedule. Facilities Maintenance positions are "critical positions", meaning you are required to report to work during adverse weather or other emergency situations, to maintain equipment and/or assist the Town in any capacity necessary to continue Town operations. * Provides support for athletic events as needed * Mows and prepares fields for play, often with short notice or turn around between games * Maintains the structural integrity of the playing surface by rebuilding mounds, baselines, batter's boxes, infield, etc. * Maintains fencing and other surrounding structures * Maintains all facilities located in the complex to which assigned * Develops and maintains playing surfaces at a high standard * Operates equipment in cutting trees and limbs around facility * Creates landscape designs around the park * Makes decisions regarding application of pesticides * Measures, lays off, paints lines and logos on fields prior to play * Uses specialized equipment and technical knowledge to maintain turf at a high level * Performs routine maintenance and repair on equipment * Inspects facilities and fields to insure they are safe * Works with hazardous weather response team for snow, ice, debris removal * Performs other job-related tasks as required * Considerable knowledge of turf management, landscaping and horticulture; * considerable knowledge of and skill in the use of specialty equipment used in turf management; * Considerable knowledge of the sports played in the facilities to which employee is assigned; * Considerable knowledge of the field dimensions for the sports played at assigned facility; * General knowledge of plant growth characteristics and proper techniques for pruning and shaping; * Knowledge of the species of flowers, trees, and shrubs indigenous to central North Carolina; * Knowledge of the appropriate safety precautions of the work; * Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; * ability to work effectively with outside crews; * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with community partners and the general public; * Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to lead a work team of seasonal and/or temporary workers. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a community college with a degree in turf management, agronomy or related field and some experience working in athletic field maintenance and/or turf management. Possession of a current valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record. Possession of a Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with an acceptable driving record (or the ability to attain within six months of assuming the position). Pesticide License (or the ability to obtain within six months) National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS 100 and ICS 700 training/certification required (provided) Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment Preferences: Experience managing professional baseball or other sports fields in the transition zone. A 4-year or 2-year college degree in Turf Grass Management, or closely related field.
