Nature of Work Parks/Cass Scenic Railroad State Park The Park Superintendent 3 (Assistant Park Superintendent) will assist in the management and oversight of a devoted team of employees that serve the public through providing excellent customer service, operations and maintenance of the facilities and grounds at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park in beautiful Pocahontas County. This team member is under the direction and supervision of the Park Superintendent. This popular park consists of Company Houses, Cass Company Store, Greenbrier River Trail, campsites, picnic areas, playground, fishing areas, hiking trails, an event building, a gift shop, headquarters, and support buildings. Performs tasks at various workstations while serving visitors. Performs maintenance and repair duties indoors and outdoors that include all aspects of building and grounds upkeep. Provides excellent hospitality to all visitors through interpretation and notification and enforcement of park rules, guest reservations and registration, fee collections, staff training, and resolving guest issues. Develops and works with concessionaires for train, restaurant, barbershop, and artisans co-op. Aides in oversight of laundry operation and delivery for several parks. Employee will also maintain and improve visitor programs such as historic tours, nature programs, and interpretation of railroad and logging history. Desirable knowledge and skills include: verbal and written communication skills; office, sales and equipment knowledge; knowledge of building and grounds maintenance and repairs; ability to organize and plan efficient completion of tasks. Must have a valid driver's license or be eligible to operate a motor vehicle in West Virginia. Housing valued at $1,000 per month,plus utilities,is provided. The Assistant Superintendent may also be assigned or directed to accept temporary "off-facility" responsibilities away from Cass Scenic Railroad State Park based on necessity determined by Supervisors. Minimum Qualifications Training:Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. OR Substitution:Additional experience as described below may be substituted for the required training at a rate of one (1) year of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience per thirty (30) semester hours of coursework. AND Experience:Three (3) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience working at a state park, in a natural resources related field, in the tourism or travel industry, or in the environmental industry, two (2) years of which must have been in a responsible administrative and/or supervisory capacity. Special Requirement:Must have a valid driver's license, and must obtain a valid West Virginia driver's license within six (6) months of employment. May need to successfully complete required Special Natural Resources Police Officer training and pistol requirements as established by the Division of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Section.May need to pass periodic firearms qualification.May need to pass an initial physical examination, psychological evaluation and a polygraph examination designed to determine applicant's fitness for Special Natural Resources Police Officer enforcement duties. * The Division of Personnel uses your complete work history to qualify you for positions. Pay Differentials: * Park Superintendents who serve as Defensive Tactics Training Instructors in the Special Natural Resources Police Officer Program will receive a shift differential of $100 per month effective February 1, 2014 (SPB 2647). * Park Superintendents who are not provided an on-park residence will receive a stipend of $1,000 per month in lieu of housing effective June 1, 2012 (SPB 2601).
