Job Title: Transportation MechanicReports to: Lead Transportation MechanicDept.: Transportation ServicesExemption Status: Non-ExemptPay Scale: TD 4Calendar: 240 DaysPrimary Purpose: Responsible for maintaining and repairing the district's fleet of school buses, vehicles, and related equipment to ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of transportation services. To diagnose mechanical issues, perform preventative maintenance, and adhere to all safety and compliance standards. Qualifications: Education/Certification: High School Diploma or equivalent Clear and valid Texas commercial driver's license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements or ability to obtain upon hire Completion of a technical or vocational program in automotive or diesel technology preferred Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in medium/heavy trucks preferred Successful completion of state mandated school bus driver training and certification program or ability to obtain upon hire Experience: Minimum of two years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair (school bus or fleet experience preferred) Special Knowledge/Skills: Comprehensive knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, electrical systems, brakes, and air systems. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals Ability to pass a Texas Department of Transportation Medical Examination Ability to pass a dexterity exam Ability to access and use printed service materials Ability to communicate effectively with others Must be 18 years of age Major Responsibilities and Duties:Maintenance and Repairs Perform mechanical repairs, scheduled maintenance, and diagnostics on school buses, fleet vehicles, and equipment to ensure proper functioning and longevity. Service vehicles according to established preventative maintenance schedule and maintain accurate, updated records of preventative maintenance. Inspect vehicles and evaluate condition of systems, equipment, accessories, and lights; service as needed. Do welding and minor body work. Respond to vehicle breakdowns and perform on-site repairs or towing as necessary. Test drive vehicles post-repair to verify proper operation and performance Safety Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor. Keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition and perform preventive maintenance on shop equipment according to established schedules. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures. Other Maintain accurate and detailed records of maintenance, inspections, and materials required to perform repairs and service. Operate buses and other vehicles as needed. Drive a school bus route as required by the Transportation Services Department. Perform other duties as assigned.
