The City reserves the right to use recruitment for future vacancies in other divisions for the term of the eligibility list. Performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled tasks involved in the maintenance, repair, custodial services, or servicing of City buildings and facilities, parks and recreation buildings, grounds, open spaces, City streets, sidewalks, sewers, and storm facilities; operates trucks and heavy equipment; uses a variety of hand and power tools and equipment; performs related duties as required. Depending upon assignment, essential duties include but are not limited to, the following: PARKS Maintains and cleans parks and open space areas around City buildings, park facilities including picnic areas and barbecues, restrooms and athletic fields; performs routine landscaping including, planting, trimming, weeding and fertilizing; assists with layout of ball diamonds; assists with maintenance of irrigation systems; assists with graffiti removal in parks. FACILITIES Provides custodial services for facilities, including floors, cleaning restrooms, and removal of trash; sweeps, mops, scrubs, strips, polishes, and waxes floors; cleans rugs and carpets; dusts, polishes, and waxes furniture and woodwork; cleans and stocks restrooms; empties and cleans waste receptacles and ashtrays; washes walls, windows, mirrors, and blinds; responsible for building security; locking and unlocking rooms; moves furniture or other heavy objects for set up of City functions. Assists with preparation of surfaces for painting; applies paint, varnish, shellac, enamel, or other protective finishes to various surfaces. Assists with routine painting, plumbing, electrical and carpentry maintenance and repair. Assists with graffiti removal on city buildings and facilities. STREETS Assists with the repair and maintenance of streets, curbs, sidewalks and storm drains; breaks up concrete and/or asphalt surfaces; digs, shovels, hauls and loads and unloads soils, sands, asphalt mixes and other materials; operates hand, power and heavy equipment related to street maintenance; sand seals surfaces; prepares for overlays; cleans up work sites upon completion of jobs; observes safe work methods and safety practices, including the coning and flagging at work sites to secure from traffic; responds to emergency situations as required. TREES/GREENSCAPE Assists with root and tree maintenance including planting, pruning, removal, watering, trimming and cleanup; spreads wood chips; digs, shovels, hauls, loads and unloads soil, plants, and trees; installs, repairs, and maintains irrigation systems in medians and parkways; assists with landscape refurbishment projects for medians and parkways; operates hand, power, and heavy equipment related to tree and greenscape maintenance; responds to emergency situations as required; observes safe work methods and safety practices including coning and flagging at work sites to secure from traffic; cleans up work sites upon completion of jobs. TRAFFIC Assists with traffic sign repairs and replacement, traffic striping and legend painting; provides maintenance and refurbishment of dead-end barricades; assists with sewer maintenance operations; responds to emergency situations including traffic delineation and temporary signage as required; observes safe work methods and safety practices including the coning and flagging at work sites to secure from traffic; cleans up work sites upon completion of jobs.Knowledge of: tools, equipment, methods and materials used in building, facility, parks, trees/greenscape, traffic and streets maintenance. Ability to: learn to perform construction, custodial, landscaping and general maintenance work; perform work effectively and safely with others; understand and follow oral and written directions. Education and/or Experience Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance. Graduation from high school or equivalent is required. Must exhibit willingness to learn and perform duties associated with grounds, building maintenance, custodial work and street maintenance. Required licenses and Certificates Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record. The employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Depending on assignment, the employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds frequently, in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific visual abilities required by this job include those required for those who operate cars, trucks, and other heavy equipment. Work Environment While performing the duties of this job and depending on assignment, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions, works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration; works in precarious places and is exposed to fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electric shock.
