About the Role The General Counsel position at NILC will report directly to the President and lead the organization in identifying, analyzing, and addressing the organization's internal legal risks and needs. The General Counsel serves as a member of the Senior Leadership Team and will identify and analyze legal issues impacting NILC and its sister 501(c)4 organization, the NILC Immigrant Justice Fund. Specific Position Responsibilities Manage the corporate legal affairs for the organization and provide legal counsel to the organization, President, Executive Vice Presidents, Board of Directors, and senior team. Provide in-house legal services and manage the provision of such services by outside counsel when necessary. Advise the Executive and Senior Leadership Teams and Boards of Directors to ensure that NILC follows best governance practices. Provide strategic direction on the protection of intellectual property. Maintain organization's Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws. Direct responses and make recommendations on all matters that could result in legal action involving the organization. Represent the organization as a member of the Senior Leadership Team. Serve as the internal legal counsel on organizational matters and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws. Coordinate overall compliance functions of the organization. Oversee the contract function and set standards for NILC's legal documents and agreements. Provide counsel to the development team on legacy gifts and donor bequests. Maintain awareness of, analyze, interpret, and make recommendations regarding existing and proposed laws and regulations. Supervisory Responsibilities Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains staff. Oversees the daily workflow of direct reports. Acts as a coach and mentor including providing constructive feedback. Manages outside consultants, third-party administrators, and vendors. What We Are Looking for in This Role Qualifications Required: Education: Juris Doctorate and member in good standing of a State Bar. Experience: Service as General Counsel or Associate General Counsel of a non-profit organization is preferred. Minimum of 12 years of practical legal experience in a cross-cultural setting. 5-10 years of supervisory experience in the legal field. Understanding of finance, contracts, compliance, procurement, and best practices in non-profit policies. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and build consensus. Location and Travel: Up to 30 percent of overnight interstate travel may be required; generally, travel is quarterly to the NILC Washington, D.C. office or another location within the US for 3-5 nights. Compensation: The salary range for this role is $154,900 - $193,600, with an incredible benefit package including employer-paid healthcare coverage, retirement plan, paid parental leave, and a generous paid-time-off policy.
