Turf & Land Technician Holden Arboretum Opportunity: The Arboretum Landscapes department seeks three (3) Turf & Land Technician seasonal employees to support the care and maintenance of diverse landscapes, including meadows, fields, research collections, lawns, road edges, and property boundaries. Responsibilities include mowing and string trimming, operating zero-turn mowers and tractors with mowing attachments, and ensuring the safe and efficient use of specialized turf management equipment. This role also involves pruning trees, assisting with pest control, and maintaining a high standard of landscape presentation. Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining well-groomed, healthy outdoor spaces are essential. Position Details: * A great opportunity for individuals seeking summer work to gain experience in natural sciences, horticulture, or arboriculture, as well as for those looking to stay active and engaged in a meaningful role during the summer months * Seasonal role working to help maintain the grounds throughout the Holden Arboretum * Positions are available from April - September, with flexibility in the start date * Potential extension through October based on weather * Hours range from 16 to 24 per week, based on candidate availability and weather * 7:00 am - 3:30 pm Monday - Friday, flexibility around class schedule during the academic year if needed * $15.00/hour Key Responsibilities: Key responsibilities of the seasonal Turf & Land Technician include but are not limited to: * Operate power equipment to maintain turf and meadows in core and natural areas in excellent horticultural condition * Hauling brush, mowing, and raking * String trimming * Performs various tasks including but not limited to soil preparation, planting, watering, fertilizing, bed renovation, mulching, pruning, staking, transplanting, thinning, weed control, and litter removal * Use of hand pruners, loppers, hand saws and backpack sprayers * Pest control * Reserve, check-in, and check-out equipment and daily maintenance tasks * Observe all safety protocols and always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) required for positions and/or specific activities * Report any hazards or unsafe conditions immediately to your supervisor * Other relevant duties as assigned Qualifications and Skills: * Support Holden Forests & Gardens' mission, vision, and values * Demonstrate a passion for people and nature * High school diploma, or equivalent, preferred * Experience working in the natural sciences, horticulture or arboriculture, preferred * Willing and able to operate small power equipment, required * A desire to work outdoors performing manual labor in all weather conditions * Willingness to receive training for pesticide application certification * Experience of tractor mowing and/or fine turf mowing and/or weed whip is a plus * Experience in the operation of stick shift vehicles and other machinery (chippers, weed eaters, sprayers, pickup trucks, etc.) a plus * Effectively work and communicate within a team * Able to work independently * A positive attitude, willingness to learn * Valid driver's license and an acceptable vehicle record, required Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation: * Willing and able to operate small power equipment and perform strenuous, hands-on work year-round in all types of weather conditions * Working outdoors or indoors where the ambient temperature spans 0-100 degrees Fahrenheit * Transporting oneself by foot over a variety of terrain that may be wet, slippery, uneven and/or rocky. * Operating a variety of machinery and equipment including utility vehicle, pruners, sheers, weed eaters, sprayers, blowers and push and riding mowers. * Standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, pulling, pushing, sitting, grabbing and lifting * Carrying up to 35 lbs. on a repetitive basis daily Some of the reasons Holden Forests & Gardens (HF&G) is a great place to work!
