This position is responsible for performing construction/repair projects, park/playground maintenance/renovations, tree planting/maintenance, trail and athletic field maintenance. This position is key to maintaining an extremely effective team that follows defined schedules requiring skilled labor with a high level of responsibility. Positions in this class are responsible for the maintenance, construction, or horticultural duties in city parks, downtown mall, schools, right-of-ways and public recreational facilities. Performs other duties as assigned. May have supervisory duties. Reports to the Unit Supervisor, Crew Leader, or other first line supervisor. The preferred hiring amount is between $18.00 - $19.29 Hourly ($37,440.00 - $40,123.20 Annually). As of March 28, 2024, this position is in the Labor and Trades bargaining unit in accordance with the City's Collective Bargaining Ordinance (Ordinance No. 22-128). Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative. The parties are in the process of negotiating the collective bargaining agreement, which will take effect on July 1, 2025. Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. Financial Management * May participate in tracking inventory of equipment and operating supplies; * May provide input in equipment, and annual operating supply needs; * Reports to supervisor when supplies or equipment are needed; * Uses equipment and consumes operating supplies diligently; Human Resources * Actively participates in performance evaluation system; * Positions at this level may be required to participate in training and/or may conduct training for other staff; * Self-Supervision: stays on task when left unsupervised; * Positions at this level may supervise voluntary and/or seasonal staff; Minimum Qualifications: * Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school or vocational school diploma or GED. (If no diploma or GED is obtained, must have a minimum of Two (2) years of direct work experience in the field.) * At least six (6) months of experience in a related field. * Possession of a valid, appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; * Ability to follow basic written and verbal instructions; * Ability to perform demanding physical work for continued periods; * Ability to work outside with regular exposure to severe weather; * General knowledge of the maintenance, repair and manual tasks of the area assigned; * General knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment required in the work; * General knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools required in the work; * Skills in the use of equipment to which assigned Special Requirements: * May require the ability to obtain a Pesticide Applicator certification. * May require a Class B Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of employment. Physical requirements for this position as outlined by the Department of Labor: HEAVY WORK: Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. occasionally and/or up to 50 lbs. frequently and/or up to 20 lbs. constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work. This position may be required to work weekends, nights, holidays, standy-by/on-call, emergency on-call, and/or weather-related emergency on-call. This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing for pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident and random testing. The majority of time spent in this position involves outside work which may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, extreme brightness, chemicals/hazardous waste, blood-borne pathogens, electrical hazards, extreme darkness, fumes/airborne particles and fuels. This position also requires the regular use of or subject to vibration, ladder/step stool, traffic/roadways, driving light equipment, driving heavy equipment, driving a City vehicle, moving mechanical parts and/or confined space(s).
