Job Responsibilities Under limited supervision, directs and manages forest management, forest fire suppression, law enforcement, and landowner service programs for one of three geographical areas (region). Recommend program changes to ensure accountability, effectiveness and efficiency of the region activities. Participates in the management decision-making process for the region and is held accountable for end results. * Supervises, directs, and coordinates fire management and law enforcement activities within the region. Readiness levels, work and flight schedules are set and followed according to procedures; fire occurrences and cause data and response times are monitored regularly and reviewed with Unit Foresters and supervisors; recommend program changes to ensure accountability, effectiveness and efficiency. * Supervises, directs, and coordinates forest management activities within the region. Maintains a professional and cooperative relationship with landowners, federal, state and local contacts, and South Carolina Forestry Commission (SCFC) forestry staff. Supervises and supports the agency's informational and educational efforts to raise public awareness of forestry environmental and economic benefits. Promotes fire prevention and forest management practices and services to public and private landowners. * Responsible for and coordinates the administrative activities of the region. Oversees the financial management practices in the region. Monitors and reviews revenue, approves expenditures and allocates resources as necessary. Manages fixed assets. Serves as a liaison between the regional and central office. * Oversees the supervision of region staff. Reviews and assesses training and development with Assistant Regional Forester for efficient and knowledgeable performance of all regional personnel. Ensures the Employee Performance Management System (EPMS) is used as a continuous communication tool; EPMS planning stages and evaluations are completed within agency policy/procedures. Promotes an environment that focuses on quality work product, cost effectiveness and customer service. * Provides assistance and support with performance of additional duties in support of the SCFC's mission. This position is for internal applicants only. Minimum and Additional Requirements * A bachelor's degree in forestry from a program accredited by the Society of American Foresters or a bachelor's degree in forestry or related natural resources field that meets the Society of American Foresters' Certified Forester educational requirements and eight (8) years of forestry experience. A master's degree in forestry from a college or university accredited by SAF can be substituted for one (1) year of experience. * Must become a SC Registered Forester within six (6) months of being hired. * Must participate in the initial physical fitness test: a walk of two miles in 30 minutes carrying a 25 lb. pack or meet the agency's physical fitness program requirements. * Must obtain firefighter registration with the Office of State Fire Marshal. * Criminal background check is required. * Must possess a valid SC Driver's license (Class D). * SCFC experience required. * Supervisory experience required. Additional Comments * Extensive knowledge of forest management principles and wildland fire control procedures. * Extensive knowledge of agency mission, programs and objectives; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to manage and provide guidance to employees; ability to foster an environment that focuses on continuous quality improvement and customer service; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. * Computer skills necessary. * Ability to supervise professional, technical and clerical staff. * Limited supervision. This position has a broad range of independence. Ability to exercise judgment and discretion. Must be self-motivated. * Must be able to lift, walk, squat, climb and carry objects up to 50 lbs. Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in changing environmental conditions. * Works, 37.5 hours, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. schedule. Job requires occasional evening and weekend work. Overnight travel required to include extensive periods of time (up to 18 days) on large fire incidents in/out of the state. * Position requires the employee to be subject to random, post incident/accident, reasonable suspicion and rehabilitation monitoring and drug and alcohol testing consistent with SCFC Drug-Free Workplace - CDL Drug and Alcohol Testing. This position is designated as safety sensitive and essential.
