About the Division The Buildings & Grounds Division (B&G) is responsible for the Capitol Campus and the Department of Enterprise Services (DES) managed building operations, stewardship and historic preservation. B&G provides service to over 42 agencies, maintains, operates and preserves the 486-acre state Capitol Campus in Olympia, including more than 25 buildings, 18 public monuments, four state parks and a 260-acre lake. B&G executes these responsibilities through the following service programs: Facilities Operations, Grounds Operations, Leadership and Admin, Maintenance & Repairs, Support Services (custodial). About this position The Carpenter position is responsible for a wide variety of trade related maintenance repairs and construction remodeling work for the Department of Enterprise Services (DES) owned facilities within Thurston County. This role requires the incumbent to be able to perform general maintenance, repairs, remodeling, and construction tasks utilizing working knowledge of several related trades. You will be working with other trades workers including but not limited to Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning, Electrical, Paint, and Grounds to complete the work. Routine duties will include inspecting, repairing, installing and maintaining physical facilities, as well as repairing machinery and equipment. This position is Continuity of Operations Plans (COOP) Designation - for Disaster or Emergency Recovery. This means that the incumbent is required to provide support during an emergency situation affecting DES-owned assets, both on and off the State Capitol Campus. Some of what you will be doing Ability to perform general maintenance, repair, remodeling, and construction projects, utilizing working knowledge of several related skill fields including, but not limited to carpentry, all phases of sheetrock installation, and heavy equipment use. Incumbent inspects, repairs, installs, and maintains physical facilities as well as maintain and repair tools, equipment, and machinery. * Light demolition, including sheetrock, carpet, cove base, wall studs, doors, windows, cabinets, hardware, furniture, window coverings, decking, and concrete * Cutting or shaving concrete and digging post holes * Establishing wall-framing layouts for office remodels * Installing steel or wood studs, decking, insulation and other similar framing materials * Repairing sheetrock, plaster, marble, concrete, and other common building materials on campus * Installing and adjusting doors, door hardware, thresholds, weatherstripping, and access hatches * Installing or replacing windows and/or glass * Installing and adjusting cabinets and cabinets hardware * Mixing, pouring, and patching concrete and asphalt * Installing expansion joint and seam material on vertical and horizontal surfaces * Removing and installing wall-hangings, monitor mounts, and window treatments * Removing debris from roofs, gutters, and overhangs * Repairing roof membrane damage * Installing, repairing and replacing gutter material * Installing paper product dispensers, soap dispensers and restroom hardware * Removing and installing signage and posts * Power washing and/or cleaning monuments and memorials * Removing and installing ceiling tiles * Hanging sheetrock, applying joint compound, and sanding * Installing, replacing, and repairing carpet tiles * Fabricate, install, maintain, and repair woodworking * Refinishing furniture: applying primer, paint, wood stain, wood putty, bonding agents, caulking, sealants, and lubricants Administrative Functions * Proficiency in using a desktop computer to include Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Teams, Word) and smartphone devices * Keeping detailed track of work progress and recording hourly time accurately and daily * Reading and responding to emails, texts, and phone calls promptly and professionally * Adding work documentation notes on all work orders, to include details as directed by your supervisor * Submitting purchase requests and notifying your supervisor once parts arrive * Keeping track of building-specific stock materials, ensuring their proper storage and quantity, and notifying your supervisor when actionable items are necessary * Product and construction methodology research * Completion of required training on time * Participation in shop and division training, planning, and collaboration Shop Stewardship * Contribution to our shop's responsibility of work area cleanliness, organization, tool maintenance and proper tool and equipment storage * Maintaining materials storage areas throughout the campus in a clean, orderly state * Notifying your supervisor of issues or recommendations regarding tools, equipment, methods, and other perceived improvements and benefits to the shop Required Qualifications * High school diploma or GED AND * Four (4) years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work OR * Full journey level status in a Carpenter's union OR * An associate's degree in a construction-related field AND * Two (2) years general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work OR * One (1) year certificate in a construction-related field AND * Three (3) years general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work AND * Ability to lift 50lbs * Ability to perform work from a ladder * Ability to work in positions of stooping, bending, twisting, squatting, and kneeling * Ability to operate using low and high vibratory tools * Must be able to push/pull tools and/or equipment weighing up to 75lbs Special
