NHPS is a large urban public-school district with a nearly $400 million budget, educating more than 19,000 students.POSITION: The CFO will be responsible for all financial management activities, providing counsel and advice to senior management and the Board on all financial matters. The CFO is a key strategic leader and will manage the financial and business affairs of the New Haven Public Schools, maintaining the integrity of District finances and maximizing resources.SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: Oversee and manage financial operations and staff for NHPS. Serve as the principal advisor to the Board of Education and senior management in financial services management. Ensure timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial reporting for various stakeholders. Design financial and budgeting systems that reinforce interschool equity. Create financial models and forecasts; communicate financial data clearly. Represent the school district on financial issues in public meetings. Coordinate and oversee all fiscal audits; ensure compliance with financial regulations. Support the capital budget in collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer. Provide schools with information and resources to achieve budgetary goals. Monitor organization performance against budget and recommend actions to control spending. Ensure accuracy and reliability of financial data; support user training and periodic audits. Design and implement the annual operating budget request process. Meet with community groups to explain staffing and financial support structures. Coordinate with internal audit staff to identify financial accountability issues. Prepare cost estimates for grant applications and proposals for improvements in aid formulae. Perform other duties as directed by the Superintendent. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting or related field required; advanced degree, MBA and/or CPA preferred. Minimum of 7 years related experience, preferably in a large government organization. Demonstrated leadership ability and knowledge of accounting practices relevant to public-school systems. Thorough knowledge of financial management laws, policies, and regulations. Ability to develop integrated financial services programs and analyze financial data. Expertise in publicly funded education programs preferred. Excellent written and interpersonal skills. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to work evenings and weekends.SALARY: Minimum starting salary, $165,000; salary will commensurate with experience.The New Haven Public Schools is an equal opportunity employer.
