In this position you will report to 201 W. Colfax Ave. but can expect to work at various field sites around Denver anywhere from 1 to 4 days a week. What You'll Do Denver's Department of Public Health and Environment (DDPHE) is dedicated to advancing Denver's environmental and public health goals. DDPHE works collaboratively with city, state and community partners to conduct education, community engagement, and enforcement to promote healthy people, healthy pets, and a sustainable environment. DDPHE oversees a number of services related to public health and the environment and is comprised of seven divisions: Division of Shared Services and Business Operations; Community & Behavioral Health; Public Health Investigations; Denver Animal Protection; the Office of the Medical Examiner; Emergency Management and Medical Operations; and Environmental Quality. The Environmental Quality (EQ) Division's Water Quality Team has an opening for a Water Quality Monitoring and Mosquito Control Specialist (Environmental Public Health Investigator II). The position will be responsible for supporting the Environmental Quality Division's streams, lakes, and green infrastructure monitoring programs and conducting seasonal mosquito control activities. The position will work closely with Division Project Managers and the Wastewater Management Division and contract laboratories. Specifically, in this position, you will: * Collect water quality, benthic macroinvertebrate, and soil samples during routine sampling events in accordance with program procedures. * Coordinate sampling events with the City's in-house and program contract labs * Test water samples for turbidity, presence of hazardous algal toxins, and other analytes as needed. * Filter and prepare samples for transport to the analytical laboratory. * Package and transport or ship samples to the analytical laboratory. * Conduct routine and annual maintenance and cleaning of equipment and supplies as needed. * Update the program's standard operating procedures and field sampling plan as needed. * Determine required sampling volumes, holding times, quality assurance needs, and ensure samples are collected using appropriate sampling techniques. * Manage data generated by the monitoring program. Prepare data for submission to the Denver Open Data Catalog and the Colorado Data Sharing Network. * Assist with surveillance and control of mosquitos at known problem sites. * Investigate citizen concerns related to surface water and mosquitos as needed. * Monitor and maintain sampling and mosquito control equipment and supplies. * Manage the program's water quality lab. * Along with all DDPHE staff, actively participate in emergency preparedness and response team activities to support DDPHE's responsibilities outlined in the City's Emergency Operations Plan. This may require being 'on-call' from time to time respond to emergencies. Training will be provided. * Other duties as assigned. This position operates outside, in potential inclement weather conditions including extreme heat or cold. This position also requires the operation of a city vehicle and could be required to lift equipment and samples weighing up to 30 lbs. Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics: * Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or related. * Experience sampling environmental media. * Experience calibrating, using, and maintaining field instruments for monitoring water quality. Experience using In Situ and YSI field meters, automated samplers, flowmeters, and level loggers would be beneficial. * Experience with data management and interpretation, generating reports of any kind. * Knowledge of remote sensing networks is desired, but not required. * Experience with environmental data management systems, GIS, and PowerBI is desired, but not required. * Knowledge of surface water quality systems is desired, but not required. * Completion of OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training is preferred. * Completion of ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-300, and IS-700 trainings is desired, but not required. Required Minimum Qualifications * Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree. * Experience Requirement: Two (2) years of experience conducting environmental/public health inspections, investigations or environmental/public health management activities. * Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education. * Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements. * License/Certifications: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. * Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
