As the Tree Maintenance Specialist, you will support the mission of the organization in strategically planning and maintaining a vibrant urban forest for the benefit of the community and environment. Trees play an important role in creating safer, more livable neighborhoods; establishing community image; reducing the heat island effect: improving air and water quality and increasing property values. Look to some of the reasons why the City of San Mateo is a great place to work, What You'll Do The Tree Maintenance Specialist inspects, makes assessment of work needs and responds back to citizens requesting tree service. Additionally, this role interacts with supervisors and other City staff to make determinations for prioritizing and scheduling of tree-care related work, including administering and coordinating all assigned tree-care related contracts within the arboricultural program. The Tree Maintenance Specialist prepares necessary technical contract data and notification; inspect quality and quantity of work; act as the City's liaison between the contractor and the public; maintain accurate records of work and schedules and ensure compliance with specifications and regulatory requirements; and assists in the enforcement of the City's Heritage and Street Tree Ordinance. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: * Inspects citizen requests for tree service to determine the appropriate maintenance needs. Coordinates and inspects work of contractors for various tree maintenance activities. * Conducts periodic surveys to determine maintenance needs; formulates programs for contractors or City personnel to perform needed maintenance; and submits recommended programs to the Parks and Landscape Managing Arborist. * Keeps accurate reports of contract and other assigned activities; and submits progress, performance and completion reports, work order records, purchase requests and requisitions and reports of claims against the City. * Fully utilizes the computerized work systems in accordance with workflow processes. * Collects data and makes recommendations to the appropriate level of management on budget requirements. Works with engineers, supervisors, arborists and consultants on project planning, scheduling, and execution of contracts. * Develops plans, specifications and other requirements for each assigned contract or project; organizes work to best utilize resources. Makes public contacts as needed in relation to contract and Division services. * Prepares daily, monthly, and quarterly summaries of work accomplished and unit costs of significant operations. * Assists in the enforcement of the Heritage and Street Tree Ordinance. * Assists in developing and participating in community outreach and education programs. Operates field and office equipment as necessary to the performance of the above duties. * Attend meetings of and prepare reports for Commissions and Advisory Groups; provide technical and professional advice and recommendations relating to tree maintenance and planning. * Respond to and resolve difficult resident inquiries and complaints. The Tree Maintenance Specialist receives general supervision by the Parks & Landscape Managing Arborist or department management staff. What You Bring Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: * Three years of experience in tree maintenance operations, at least one of which has been in coordinating the work of contractors or in a lead/supervisory capacity * The equivalent of completion of two years of college including or supplemented by training in tree maintenance, arboriculture, or urban forestry. (A Bachelor's Degree in Urban Forestry, Environmental Horticulture or a related field may be substituted for up to two years of the desired experience.) License: Arborist Certification from the International Society of Arborists to be obtained within one year of appointment. Bonus Points (highly desirable) * Possession of the State of California qualified Applicator's License or Pest Control Advisors' License * Experience with tree inventory and permit software Benefits What We Offer * Salary: $8,368 - $9,548/month * Comprehensive benefits package including generous paid leave and health benefits. * CalPERS retirement (2% @ 55 for classic members; 2% @ 62 for new members).
