This position serves as the veterinary specialist and program manager specific to a program within the Division of Animal Health. The position works with industry and other state, tribal, national and international organizations in the development of, disease control methods, testing protocols, management practices, and educational materials. The position reviews laboratory results, works with the WI Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, and takes appropriate steps to uphold the laws of the state and federal governments. The position provides training, education and outreach services in the area of disease control to division staff, private veterinarians, livestock producers and the public. The supervisor provides administrative direction with assignments in terms of broadly defined missions and functions. The employee has responsibility for independently planning, designing and carrying out program initiatives and managing their budgets within the confines of the resources available. The position provides support for program veterinarians in epidemiology during disease outbreaks and investigations. Work may encompass a variety of species ranging from traditional livestock to exotic animals. This role is primarily office-based (90%), with opportunities for fieldwork and hands-on veterinary care, requiring occasional travel. Veterinarian Specialist - Advanced Position Description Salary Information The classification of this position is Veterinarian Specialist - Advanced which is in schedule-range 15-03 with starting pay of $49.00 per hour, commensurate with experience. A 12-month probationary period is required. Pay for current State employees will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan. Job Details DATCP does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the selected applicant being able to provide documentation of eligibility to work in the United States. A criminal background check will be performed on the selected applicant prior to an offer of employment. Possession of a valid driver's license, or the ability to provide one's own transportation for work purposes, is required. This position requires at least 90% of the time spent in the office. Travel is required for approximately 10% of this position's duties. Possession of, or eligibility to obtain, credentials to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Wisconsin. Qualifications Minimally qualified candidates will have each of the following: * A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an AVMA accredited college * Experience applying veterinary medicine principles, concepts, scientific methodologies, and techniques * Possession of, or eligibility to obtain, credentials to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Wisconsin In addition, highly qualified candidates will have the following: * Advanced degree and/or certificate (farm-raised deer, chronic wasting disease, epidemiology) or similar field * Practical field experience in farm-raised deer, chronic wasting disease, epidemiology, or a similar field * Experience providing education and/or outreach to clients, customers, general public, and other professionals in the field (professional or public level) It is critically important your application materials clearly describe your experience related to the stated criteria.
