Role Overview Beacon AI is seeking an experienced, hands-on Engineering Manager to lead the team responsible for Murdock, our AI-powered pilot assistant platform. In this role, you'll work closely with our VP of Engineering to guide a talented team focused on edge compute work and AI, including Route/Path Planning, Machine Learning, Robotics, Tracking, Prediction, and Systems Engineering. We are looking for a highly technical, detail-oriented individual who is comfortable balancing hands-on individual contributor work with managing and growing a team of exceptional engineers. We welcome candidates with a range of experience, from seasoned Tech Leads to Senior Managers who are passionate about Beacon AI's mission and eager to contribute as hands-on technical leaders. What You'll Do Team Leadership : Lead and manage the Murdock engineering team, providing guidance, mentorship, and active technical support to ensure the team operates at its best. Hands-on Coding & Technical Contribution : Serve as a highly technical contributor, engaging directly in coding, building, and troubleshooting alongside the team. Project Management : Plan, execute, and deliver engineering projects related to Murdock, ensuring timely delivery within scope and budget. Vision and Strategy : Define the technical direction and align team goals with Murdock's roadmap, translating strategic objectives into achievable milestones. Collaboration : Work with customers to understand their needs and align engineering efforts with business objectives and user requirements. Code Quality : Uphold high engineering standards by driving best practices for code quality, security, testing, and continuous integration. Innovation : Identify and adopt cutting-edge technologies and methodologies to improve engineering processes and product performance. System Reliability & Performance : Continuously monitor and enhance Murdock's system performance and reliability. Recruitment & Team Growth : Take ownership of hiring, onboarding, and developing top-tier engineering talent, setting a high engineering bar. Product Sense : Leverage strong product instincts to ensure Murdock delivers exceptional value to users, particularly in iOS and web interfaces. Customer Deliveries : Manage the execution of customer-facing deliverables, ensuring seamless integration and impactful outcomes. What Will Make You Successful Proven Engineering Experience : 6-10+ years of technical experience and 1-3 years of experience managing and leading medium-sized teams, ideally as a front-line manager. Highly Technical : Recent experience as an individual contributor and a demonstrated ability to dive into technical details, particularly in autonomous or robotic systems. Leadership Abilities : Proven ability to motivate, guide, and build high-performing engineering teams, emphasizing people and performance management. Execution-Oriented : A hands-on, output-driven leader capable of managing the details and execution of team and customer deliverables. Communication Skills : Exceptional communication and collaboration skills to align team efforts with organizational goals and inform leadership effectively. Agility and Adaptability : Experience working in fast-paced environments with agile methodologies and scaling processes in a growing company. Product Experience : Great product sense, particularly in iOS and web platforms, with a strong intuition for building impactful solutions. End-to-End Ownership : Excited to lead initiatives from ideation to market launch, with a proven track record of driving technical projects to successful outcomes. System Design : Expertise in building robust, scalable systems, particularly in ML training pipelines, distributed systems, and performance optimization. Bonus Points AI Expertise : Experience in natural language processing, probabilistic decision-making, and generative AI, including pretraining foundation models, fine-tuning, and model distillation. Cloud Experience : Familiarity with distributed systems and operating large-scale infrastructure on cloud platforms. Product Launch : Experience taking a product to market, including customer delivery and deployment. ML Infrastructure : Background in building and maintaining ML training pipelines at scale, with a focus on efficiency and speed. This is a hybrid role and requires working from our San Carlos, CA office at least three days a week, with the option to work remotely the remaining days.
