Educational Specialist - Youth Stand United Program/Department: Youth Stand United Reports to: Program Director Work Location: 1835 Sterling Place, Brooklyn, NY 11233 Hours: Full Time - 35 hours per week Monday - Friday Salary Range: $54,000 - $54,000 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Founded in 1866, Brooklyn Community Services (BCS) empowers children and families to reach their full potential, strengthen families, and foster self-sufficiency in adults. With programs in 25+ locations, BCS serves more than 20,000 individuals a year. The Youth Stand United Employment and Education Program assists youth (16 to 21) with serious emotional disturbances in making a successful transition to adulthood. Services are designed to strengthen families and help youth develop competencies and skills that promote economic self-sufficiency, self-reliance, and personal growth. The goal of Youth Stand United is to assist youth in moving towards independence by improving their academic and employment status through pursuing TASC diplomas and obtaining competitive employment while addressing mental health challenges. The program encourages family and caretaker participation. Responsibilities: Coordinate all education-related services and opportunities. Assess each youth's individual educational needs and administer academic aptitude tests. Assist in the enrollment process by conducting monthly placement testing and initial academic assessments. Refer youth to ACCESS-VR and arrange for TASC (GED) exam at official test centers. Assist youth with college preparation and referrals for post-secondary educational opportunities. Provide instruction for students in Basic Education and Pre-TASC Group, enhancing foundational skills. Teach the basic fundamentals of reading, writing, and math. Administer pre and post-tests to determine readiness for the TASC exam. Provide counseling and serve as a positive mentor to students. Collaborate with vocational, clinical, and management staff to support recruitment, enrollment, retention, and referral efforts. Build and maintain relationships with testing sites. Other tasks as required. Qualifications: Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Education with training or certification in Mental Health counseling/Psychology/Social work or a related field. Minimum of 2 years' experience providing Special Education services to young adults with mental or emotional trauma. Must have HSE/TASC teaching experience. Proficient in teaching Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, and Writing. Experience administering the TABE locator 11 & 12 test. Ability to teach a range of academic levels in a collaborative, community setting. Highly organized and capable of creating detailed weekly lesson plans. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with sensitivity to the needs of participants. Bilingual Spanish a plus but not required. BCS is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
